Retna x Mac: Vagos y Reinas at the Robert Berman Gallery September 26 - October 18, 2009

The dynamic duo Retna and Mac are back again and even better than ever with their new collaborative exhibit Vagos y Reinas showing September 26-October 18, 2009 at the Robert Berman Gallery. The title of the show, which translates to “vagrants and queens”, brings together the street-infused styles of Retna, who is best known for his abstract embellishments and calligraphic font, with Mac who is well known for photo-realist approach and use of spray paint. These large scale pieces document their journey together with beautiful depictions of women and homage to neighborhood pride.  The two have collaborated on more than 20 murals in the past, but this will be their first ever exhibit together. In the world of art (especially graffiti art), collaborations are almost always a good thing. Retna and Mac bring some of the most memorable and incredible street art indoors with this exhibit. If you’re in Santa Monica, be sure to check it out!

Cassette Rainbow Print by Matt Whitwell

Matt Whitwell is young artist from Wellington, New Zealand finishing a BFA at Massey School of Fine Arts. He is heavily influenced and inspired by reducing, reusing, recycling, and reappropriation of materials. His print Cassette Rainbow is evidence of that. This print brings back memories of sitting in front of the boom box being surrounded with dozen of tapes just like the ones pictured above. This print is now available at L’Affiche Moderne’s website.

Music Listography: Your Life in (Play) Lists book featuring illustrations by Michael Gillette

Michael Gillette is a San Francisco based graphic designer and artist who describes his first love as music. I certainly can relate to that! He’s worked for some of the world’s biggest clients including Urban Outfitters, Capitol Records, Greenpeace, and Levi. He’s made designs for various apparel as well as working on exhibitions and limited prints. One of his latest works has been providing the graphics for Lisa Nola’s Music Listography: Your Life in (Play) Listsbook. This book is loaded with music-inspired list topics with awesome images to match. Gillette’s pop art style with a realistic approach brings the pages of this book alive! You can order it through Chronicle Books’ website.

Andi lookin’ flyyyy!

1. What woman, besides your mom or grandmother, do you find inspirational?

-Besides the radical women I’m related to-

Jackie & Joan Collins- for their over-the-top glamour worhship and for inspiring my weekly ladies-only gathering “Hollywood Wives Club”

Grace Jones- for being a living piece of art and a total individual

Leila Moss- for being a power blonde

2.  How did you get your start?

At my local fashion college.  It was super ghetto and I couldn’t wait to graduate.  Since then I haven’t strayed far from the fashion industry. I started out as a buyer for a boutique, moonlighted as a make-up artist for internet porn in LA. I ended up in Amsterdam working for Tommy Hilfiger as a product developer which helped get my foot in the door working for Nike in Europe.

3.  What’s your favorite piece of fashion that you’ve created?

In the late 90’s I combined a pair of giant jeans with plastic pillows and green feathers.  I wore them out, like during the day even. Raves were big back then.

More recently, my favorite project was a Capsule Collection called “La Force” that I worked on with my bff/designer extraordinaire, Kelly Wehner @ Nike. We did a pair of sublimated acid washed denim stirrup leggings that I love to pieces. It was one of the most coveted pieces from the Fall ‘08 collection.

4.  Who do you want to work with/dress in the future?

Personally, I have always fantasized about styling Jerri Blank, Amy Sedaris’ character from the show “Strangers With Candy”.

Really, I love working with designers or brands that are fearless and challenge the often conformist nature of fashion and trend.

5. What part of the apparel creation process is the most challenging and do you dislike the most?

I can’t say I dislike anything I do; I love my job so I feel super fortunate.  Working for a corporation is filled with challenges but without them life would be dull.

I think I’m making “…challenges…without them life would be dull…” my inspired statement!

…I’m still imagining Jerri Blank of Strangers With Candy decked-out in Nike! Perhaps in the US Women’s Indie Capsule Collection above? Vandals, Windrunners, AW77s, crews, t-shirts and accessories (notably, a fannypack).

With Nike collections this hot, you know Andi is doing her job and doing it well! Keep your eye out for Andi’s pieces at a Nike peddler near you and in the pages of your favorite fashion magazine!

We hope you’ve enjoyed our Women Making History series. Tomorrow we bring you a final round-up, listing all the features we did throughout the series. As always, please leave your feedback! We love to hear what you think! We do this all for you! ;)

RETAIL THERAPY

So many stores…so little time! Check out Complex Magazine’s website for their list of top 27 stores in the US. Leading the pack is the Apple Store in NYC; after all it is open for your shopping convenience 24/7! All the stores listed are extremely influential in the areas of architecture, design, art, and fashion. Some of my personal fav’s are Opening Ceremony , Fruition , and of course San Francisco’s own HUF . Get in the know about the "who’s who" in the retail game!
