M·A·C Makeup Looks at Milan Fashion Week: Kenzo, Emanuel Ungaro, Giambattista Valli, and Chloe

The good people over at M·A·C were kind enough to share their facecharts from the Fall 2010 shows during Milan Fashion Week. Today’s facecharts include: Kenzo, Emanuel Ungaro, Giambattista Valli, and Chloe, whose shows took place on Monday, March 8th and Tuesday, March 9th.

Kenzo

M·A·C artist, Tom Pecheux gave the models at Kenzo a multi-culti, elegant vibe. Said the artist, ” The Kenzo woman is an amazing woman-very multicultural with elegance and you’re never sure where she’s from. Add a peach color that is not too girly or bronzy-like a feel good color that is reminiscent of the 80’s. To give the look a “sick” quality, we have given them dry, mustard lips.” M·A·C Studio Sculpt Foundation was set with Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to pale and perfect skin. Blush in Utterly Game was then washed over the cheeks and up across the brow bone in a soft “v” shape. Pecheux applied M·A·C Pigment in Lithe (available Fall 2010) to highlight the lids (using a #224 brush). Several coats of  Opulash Mascara in Bad, Bad Black were applied to both top and bottom lashes. For lips, Pecheux applied Lipstick in Chintz with Invisible Set Powder dusted on top to set.

Emanuel Ungaro

Emmanuel Ungaro

“She’s a young French girl going out at night-as natural as an evening look can be,” said M·A·C artist, Carole Lasnier of the look at Emanuel Ungaro. M·A·C Face and Body Foundation in White was applied for sheer, pale coverage. Full Coverage Foundation in White was used to conceal and highlight the under eye. Set Powder in Porcelain and Iridescent Powder in Silver Dusk was applied to highlight the cheekbone, while Powder Blush in Dame and Pink Swoon was brushed on to flush the cheeks very softly, in a girly way. Face and Body Foundation in White was applied to the eyelids as a base (to highlight). Set Powder in Porcelain was used to highlight the inner corner of the eye. Eye Shadow in Kid was smudged on the outer corner of the eye and blended outwards. Studio Fix Mascara in Black was then applied to top lashes only, while Brow Set in Clear was combed through the brows. For lips, Lasnier  applied Cream Colour Base in Pink Shock to the center of the mouth very softly with the fingers.

Giambattista Valli

Giambattista Valli

M·A·C artist, Val Garland created a “neo-classical” vibe for the models at Giambattista Valli. Said the artist,” It’s Jean Shrimpton made more futuristic and sporty.” M·A·C Face and Body Foundation was applied as a base, while Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder was dusted on to set. Cream Colour Base was then applied to contour. Garland used M·A·C Eye Pencil in Coffee (to draw the slightest swish in the contour). Fluidline in Dipdown was applied very precisely with a #209 brush in a graphic, elongated bat wing shape. Fluidline in Blacktrack was then painted above the brown liner. Zoomlash Mascara in Lofty Brown was touched on to the roots of the lashes only. Chromacake in Pure White was painted on with a #209 brush half a centimeter below the lower lashes following the shape of the liner. Two pairs of #35 lashes were used for a heavy, hooded eye that’s sixties but more mechanical. Lips were kept muted with Lip Erase in Dim patted on to the mouth.

Chloe

Chloe

“It’s the makeup of French actresses…Dominique Sanda, Carole Bouquet, very expensive and ultra luxe”, said M·A·C artist, Charlotte Tilbury of the look at Chloe. Tilbury used M·A·C Studio Sculpt Foundation sheered out with Mineralize All-Over Lotion. Prep+Prime Transparent Finishing Powder was applied all over the skin to create a satin, matte finish. Pro Sculpting Powders in Sculpt, Shadowy, and Bone Beige as well as Powder Blush in Taupe contoured the cheekbones and was blended through the temples. Cream Colour Base in Air Force Blue was applied to the eyelids. Paintstick in Black mixed with the Cream Colour Base was blended into the crease of the lids. The same mix was applied onto lower lash line and blended. Pro Lash Mascara in Black was then applied to the roots of the lashes, while Brow Set in Beguile was brushed upwards through brows. Brow Pencil in Fling or Lingering was used to fill in sparse areas of the brows. Lips were kept nude with only Lipstick in Freckletone patted onto the mouth.

Don’t know about you ladies but I love color!! The future of fashion is looking towards lots of black, white and khaki, which is fine and certainly has it’s place but when I think Spring, I think COLOR. So I poured through the collections and pulled out some brights to provide inspiration at the end of these cold gloomy winter months. And not just one color but all colors. My suggestion for your coming Spring wardrobe is head to toe color, monochromatic dressing is fun: pair your blue dress with blue heels, a green all-in-one with green kicks, shades of yellow go together like a bunch of bananas and dare to go red-to-toe. Taste the rainbow in 2010.

Emerging San Francisco Designers at The Silverman Gallery

I had the recent pleasure of attending a truck show at the Silverman Gallery in San Francisco. Jessica Silverman, curator and proprietress, gathered together some of San Francisco’s emerging female designers for a night of fashion.

Jennifer Jennings of Serial Cultura at Silverman Gallery

Jennifer Jennings is the clothing and textile designer behind Serial Cultura. Jennings studied at the Kansas City Art Institute were she mastered the craft of traditional fiber arts. From there she explored screen printing on a Residence Artist Scholarship at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Jennings tops off her academic career having studied fashion design at Parson School of Design. Now calling the Bay Area home, her Spring 2010 collection will mark her fifth season with Serial Cultura. Her garments are constructed in San Francisco and created from prints using her own original artwork. Each garment embodies organic structure using the body to take shape…the perfect canvas for her printed art.

San Francisco native, Sarah Borruso, debuted her collection, Stars + Ravens this night. Taking inspiration from the history of her hometown, Burroso based her collection on contrasting events like the 1906 Earthquake and the hippy dippy times of the Summer of Love. Taking the theme of contrast even further, she reflects this in the name she chose for her line, creating pieces that are both understated yet outspoken and contrasting colors both bright and dark. Her garments are made of the finest fabrics: wool, cashmere and silk…a top notch collection worthy of calling San Francisco home.

Debuting their Fall ‘09 collection at New York Fashion week, the sisters Potesta, hold a Masters in knitwear, a Bachelors in fashion design and a priceless education from their Italian grandparents…grandmother being a master dressmaker and grandfather a shoemaker. Taking all they have learned over a lifetime, Micaela Greg emerged. Craftsmenship, quality and attention to detail come to mind when viewing their collection but quirky and playful come through strong in their whimsical designs. Designed and constructed in the Bay Area, we are sure to see more from Micaela Greg, they did the 2008 Avant Garde Gen Arts International Styles Award after all.

Fancy feet from Martha Davis

"Architecture for the feet" from Martha Davis

Manufacturing your footwear in the company of Chanel and Chloe is a great place to start. Add 15 years of industrial design, a couple of years studying shoe design and some engineering courses in Milan and how could you do wrong? Well you can’t. When Martha Davis couldn’t find the right shoes, she decided to make them herself. She thinks of her shoes as “little projects or architecture for the feet” and I couldn’t agree more, each shoe looks like a sleek car or building, from the heel shapes to the materials used, these works of art are worship worthy on your feet or on display. Davis designs in Hayes Valley, manufactures in Italy and sells world wide. 2009 marks her debut collection and we look forward to the future of footwear in the world of Martha Davis.

Eyes To The Sky: Get Classic This Fall. The Camel Coat.

Eyes To The Sky: Get Classic This Fall. The Camel Coat.

Eyes To The Sky: Get Classic This Fall. The Camel Coat.

Eyes To The Sky: Get Classic This Fall. The Camel Coat.

Like a white button up shirt or a little black dress, the Camel coat is a classic that will always be en vogue. A true camel coat is made of the hair of the two humped Bactrian camel. In terms of fashion these days a “Camel Coat” refers more so to the color of the coat. Yes, Camel hair coats are still made and often times the Camel hair is blend with other fibers like wool. But for the sake of this entry, let’s focus on that warm “Camel” hue and add this one to your list of Fall “Must Haves”. Sticking to a classic silhouette is probably best for fashion longevity’s sake…the Louis Vuitton version done my Marc might be of the moment come Fall 09 but the broad over-sized shoulders might not find it’s way back for a few seasons…or ten. Wrap yourself in Chloe or belt yourself tight…whatever you do, jump on the hump(s) this Fall.

Coty Research & Development Facility: An Inside Look!

When I think of Coty, I think of the array of fragrances that the company produces: From Marc Jacobs and Chloe, to Exclamation! and Kate Moss, Coty is the world’s largest fragrance company and a recognized leader in global beauty. A month ago, we were invited to a media event at Coty’s Research & Development facility in New Jersey. Though flattered and extremely excited to get an inside peek into the beauty giant, none of the M.I.S.S. writers could attend. No fear! We arranged to have some photos sent to us so that you could at least get a sense of what’s it’s like on the inside of the beauty game.

It’s not all glamour, in fact, it’s all science based so think lab coats and test tubes! Chief Scientific Officer & SVP of Global R&D, Ralph Macchio (not the Karate Kid!), let the tour and explained business behind the beauty company. He explained the product development cycle of testing, smelling, comparing and evaluating all that goes into the development of Coty’s color, fragrance and skin care business. The guests even got to use machines that tested eye lash durability and skin hydration. Exciting!

Check out the rest of the pics after the jump . . .

Paulo out at Chloe

chloe1.jpgchloe-ss08.jpg

After Paulo Andersson’s most recent collection for the house of Chloe, fashion critic Cathy Horyn said the following:

“…Paulo Melim Andersson, cannot create a look that is either uniquely Chloé or interesting. He creates pastiches from three or four trends, like the filmy draped dress and tweed boyfriend jacket, and then adds splashes of embroidery and sexy pointed footwear. Paisley and floral prints, in rose and slate-blue tones, at least looked fresh, but as with any magpie operation, most of the styles had a half-consumed look.

Ouch. But it seems as if she wasn’t the only one not totally impressed with Mr. Andersson.

Yesterday, Chloe announced that it would be parting ways with the creative director after only three seasons together. Hannah MacGibbon – former assistant to Valentino – was named as his successor.

While we think it’s a bit unfair to compare him to Phoebe Philo, Cathy was spot on with her assertion about the unoriginal aspect of Paulo’s designs (think:chunky platforms from Fall 07).

Also, the accessories – the handbags in particular – were really tragic under Paulo’s control. And since that’s what accounts for the majority of the brands revenue, the split makes a lot of sense.

So, Auf wiedersehen Paulo.

Meanwhile, we think Esteban Cortazar will be up next on the chopping block. Unless Naomi and Cindy plan on saving him again.
