M.I.S.S. NYFW: Ralph Lauren

Designer Ralph Lauren may be associated with classic American style, and his Spring 2010 runway didn’t stray far from that association. Probably the most appropriate collection for a time of economic turmoil, Mr. Lauren’s runway was composed mainly of neutral hues (classic blue jeans, navy, black, white) in timeless designs – truly investment pieces if we’ve ever seen one. We especially loved the feminine take on the traditionally male three-piece suit (a power suit if we’ve ever seen one!).

While many of the past few runways choose to take edgier viewpoints, the Ralph Lauren runway channeled fashion of eras long gone. The oxfords paired with high socks made us think of 1950s style, although we were even more surprised to see a model walk down the runway in overalls… and look chic doing it! Does this mean we can finally break out our mid-90’s versions and rock them just as fabulously? (One can only hope…)

A popular staple on this runway was none other than the boyfriend jean. Now seen everywhere, several versions of this garment made its way down the catwalk, one version destroyed, another classically baggy. We’re happy to see the trend is slated to stick around for some time, after all, you can’t beat the combination of comfort and looking glam at the same time – and we know in fashion this is a combo rarely seen together.

Another interesting trend we noticed was the denim-on-denim looks. We used to associate the full-on denim attack with fashion victims, and now it seems that fashion-forward icons are embracing this once-taboo look. Even Ralph himself made an appearance at the end of the show, sporting none other than a pinstripe blazer over – gasp! – a denim shirt and jeans.

Zac Posen’s Fall ‘09 Collection Boasts 21st Century Elegance

Zac Posen’s Fashion Week show was walked by some of the hottest faces in fashion today, including Coco Rocha, Chanel Iman, Alek Wek, and Jourdan Dunn to name a few. But let’s focus on what’s really important here: the pieces were magnificently crafted, evidence that Zac Posen and his team have been hard at work lately.

The looks featured various historical influences – think high-collared dresses and blouses, Marie Antoinette meets runway. Lately we’ve been seeing vintage influences in style, i.e. Nicole Richie’s boho chic type or ’50s Hollywood glamor, but few designers have incorporated influences into their pieces that date back centuries, especially when they’re not showing couture.

Dresses at Zac Posen featured not only bright hues but also colorful patterns to make for eye-popping outfits. Bright colors are normally reserved for spring, but rules are meant to be broken, right? One common feature throughout many of the looks was the overwhelming presence of volume from top to bottom. Volume doesn’t necessarily equal baggy, though; many of the dresses were cinched in the midsection for an ultra-flattering and form-fitting look. Zac Posen also proved that florals can be translated into autumn if you know how to wear them properly. Take for instance, Coco Rocha’s look: a floral printed skirt paired with a burnt-orange blazer . . . the best of both seasons!

If you thought you had seen it all in fashion, Zac Posen proved you wrong. Although the looks were elegant, they were wearable and relateable for the masses. No wonder Posen has such a huge celebrity following – his outfits can easily be worn to a club or to Starbucks for your daily coffee run.
