Reading is Sexy: Kelly Cutrone, “If You Have To Cry Go Outside, And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You”

I’ve never been a fan of The Hills or The City, but I started watching the shows religiously once I got wind of Kelly Cutrone. From the moment I heard her open her mouth, I was smitten. She’s the kind of business woman that I want to be – successful, but most importantly, honest. She says what other people think, but are too afraid to say.

It was just a matter of time before network executives would take note and offer Ms. Cutrone her own show, Kell On Earth, and before she got a book deal. When I heard about her book, If You Have To Cry Go Outside, And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You, I immediately got in touch with the publishing company so that I could get a preview copy. HarperOne obliged and I’m here to tell you 3 words: Read this book!

I read my copy in 1 day – it’s a very quick read – but it’s the kind of book that I will refer back to and re-read certain sections throughout my life. Kelly Cutrone is the big sister we never had – she’s savvy, been through it all and tells you like it is. She bares her soul on the pages – not hiding anything from her quick rise to the top of the NY scene to her equally quick fall, tales of drug addiction, joblessness and homelessness. Like a phoenix, she rose from the ashes and she shares her experiences so we don’t make the same mistakes – sort of a Cliff’s Notes for life.

This is an important lesson to remember when you’re having a bad day, a bad month, or a shitty year.Things will change: you won’t feel this way forever. An anyway, sometimes the hardest lessons to learn are the ones your soul needs most. I believe you can’t feel real joy unless you know what it means to fail. You can’t know what it’s like to feel holy until you know what it’s like to feel really fucking evil. And you can’t be birthed again until you’ve died.  (p.57)

Many would say that Kelly Cutrone comes off as a “bitch”, but, if you listen to what she says, and the intent behind what she says, one would realize that she’s no bitch. Instead, she’s got your back and is giving you the kind of advice that you normally would only learn the hard way. She’s gone through the hard stuff, she’s giving you the insight so you can skip over a few potholes instead of making the same mistakes.

Even though I am sometimes perceived as a bitch or a witch, the office atmosphere I cultivate is nothing like the cultural stereotype of striving women clawing each other to death to get the queen bee’s job. Women have been taught that, in order to get ahead, we have to be secretive and plotting and manipulative, because a straightforward route to the top hasn’t always existed for us, and in many industries it still doesn’t. But I don’t believe in playing into these stereotypes. We don’t have to stab each other in the back, we don’t have to take things personally and break down when we’re criticized, and we don’t have to advance at each others’ expense. (p.158)

She’s an honorary M.I.S.S. member for sure! In many ways she embodies the ideals that M.I.S.S. was founded on – we too are trying to break the stereotype that women can’t work together. And, rather than tear each other down, we can help build each other up – power in numbers ladies! I highly recommend If You Have To Cry Go Outside, And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You as required reading for all ladies in the school of life.

If You Have To Cry Go Outside, And Other Things Your Mother Never Told You releases on February 2nd and you can purchase it on Amazon.com.  Kell on Earth premiers on Monday, February 1, 2010  on Bravo at 10/9c.

The Glamorous Life: Kelly Cutrone Publicist/Reality Star/Author?

Kelly Cutrone - Kell on Earth Previews

Long before she made a cameo on The Hills or was fired by Yigal Azrouël for seating hooker with a heart of gold Ashley Dupré front row at his show during fashion week, I was borderline obsessed with Kelly Cutrone. Her no-nonsense attitude,  impressive list of clients and the fact that People’s Revolution holds a record for most fashion shows produced on September 11, 2002 is one of the main reasons I began dabbling in PR in the first place.  So  it comes as no surprise that I was a bit excited when I heard that she was finally getting her own reality show and dropping her first book all in one month.

This single mother turned authoress, didn’t miss a beat while filming two reality shows, prepping for fashion week, and writing her self help book, “If You Have to Cry Go Outside and Other Things Your Mother Never Told You”, this past summer.  According to Cutrone the book deals with what it means to be feminine and reaches out to young women giving them advice served up in her usual shoot from the hip tone.  With chapters like “A Bitch is Not a Bad Word” and “It’s not a Break Down, It’s a Breakthrough”, the book could either be fun and filled with witty advice or overly cliché but a best seller because its author happens to be a brilliant publicist. While I may be on the fence about her ability to translate her pearls of wisdom into an awesome tome, I am more than confident her reality show will be one to watch.

After being fed bits of Cutrone’s straight talk and love of the color black via cameos on MTV’s The Hills and The City, the channel responsible for bringing Rachel Zoe and Brad to the masses, is now bringing People’s Rev and fashion PR to the forefront. On the plus side I know Kelly and her staff are way cooler than Taylor and Brad which will make for beyond interesting TV.  In addition, 70 percent of her clients have agreed to appear on the show, meaning we actually get to see Jeremy Scott come in the office instead of listening to one side of a conversation with him. The down side is, the promotion of fashion public relations will make it twice as hard for me to find a j-o-b, but I digress.

When asked by WWD if she was planning on moving away from the PR biz to focus on her own personal brand Cutron had this to say…

“P.r. is what I know how to do to make money and it’s what I’m really good at, I think it’s a natural thing to say, ‘Oh, OK. Well, now Kelly Cutrone has to leave p.r., but that would be an old model and I’m not really interested in old models….Do I want to stick around when I’m making a fortune writing books and producing television, taking s–t from a designer who pays $6,000 a month who doesn’t want to pay their bills for three months? No. Does being on TV and writing books give me the freedom to kick their asses out of my office before they f–k me over? Yeah. That’s the reality”

Well said.

Kell On Earth premiers on Bravo on Feb 1 and “If You Have to Cry Go Outside and Other Things Your Mother Never Told You” hits your local bookstores on Feb 2.

Winners of previous Project Runway seasons - this could be you!

Fashion reality show, Project Runway, is scheduled to hit the airwaves after a long industry dispute over its move from NBC cable outlet, Bravo, to the Lifetime network. It’s been settled that the show will move to Lifetime and will return to New York for filming. Season six, or the lost season, was filmed in Los Angeles yet failed to air due to legal issues. Castings are being held in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and Seattle. Show us what you got! Season seven has been long anticipated! My only question is, does anyone tune into Lifetime?
