This Ilk – A Fresh Take On Lace

This Ilk – A Fresh Take On Lace

Designer Tamara Bavdek believes lace is to textiles what gold is to metals. But rather than taking lace by the yard to create clothing or appliques, she gives lace new life as jewelry. It all started when Tamara went for a 60s -inspired, boyish bob hair cut and feminized her look by adorning her ears with layers of big and long earrings.  She began creating earrings using cutouts of lace because the designs are not only beautiful and versatile but light weight, which allowed her to go as big and long as she wanted with the jewelry.

This Ilk Jeannie

After many compliments and encouragement, Tamara started her line of jewelry called This Ilk, “Ilk” signifying “of the same class or kind.” What started out as just earrings soon grew into a collection of necklaces, anklets, brooches, bracelets, and belts. Using stiffened lace, Tamara creates charming, feminine pieces with a touch of modernist simplicity.

The collection is separated into groups, with each named after feminine characters inspired by the lace used. The Athena group is a collection of large earrings and a necklaces that have design elements you might find in ancient Greek design. The Leia group is a collection of bracelets, belts, necklaces and earrings with a geometric design reminiscent of intergalactic film Star Wars. The entire collection is priced moderately, with the pieces ranging from $22 to $48.

Louis, Louis: L’Aime du Voyage Fine Jewelry Collection

Louis, Louis: L’Aime du Voyage Fine Jewelry Collection

Louis Vuitton's L'Aime du Voyage

L’Aime du Voyage or “the spirit of travel” is the first fine jewelry collection from Louis Vuitton. Spearheaded by Lorenz Baümer (the talented art director of LV’s fine jewelry), the collection of rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches show exemplary craftsmanship. The intricacy and delicate beauty of each set would leave you believing that the pieces are something of royal heirlooms dating back to the 1800’s.

The jewelry collection has three distinct features: the lace, the Louis Vuitton diamonds, and the precious stones.

The lace was created by Baümer to enhance each piece of jewelry with a soft, fabric-like element that plays on transparency through it’s assorted Louis Vuitton Monogram flower cut-outs.
The Louis Vuitton diamonds are diamonds in two special cuts: the LV Flower and the LV Star, shapes that pull inspiration from the famous LV Monogram flower pattern. The diamonds have between 65 to 77 facets which, in addition to it’s shape,  give it a brilliance that can’t be mistaken as anything other than the sparkle from a Louis Vuitton diamond.

The stones come in a variety of hues and tones so that strong statements  in design can be achieved through color. Gradients, monochromatic schemes and stark contrasts enhance the shapes and carry out the themes of each set.

There are five sets in the collection, each inspired by people and elements found across the globe.
The Massai set takes you to Africa, where the color found on the collars and bibs worn by the Massai tribe can be found reflected in each piece.

The Geisha set is inspired by the world renowned Japanese performers it’s named after. The set features shapes that resemble the fans and umbrellas geisha’s use to accessorize as well as shapes inspired by plants from Japan’s landscape, the sakura and lotus.

The Seville set takes it’s name from a city that serves as Spain’s artistic, cultural and financial center. The set captures Seville’s fluidity and grace through the use of flowing lines and colors that stay along reds and pinks.

The Shangai is an homage to the Orient with fiery colored precious stones against red and white gold, which slither and twist in designs that resemble flickering flames.

Last but not least is the Cabaret set, the French-inspired set that features shapes and colors inspired by the the lively movement of cabaret clubs with ocean-like colors for an added earthy element.

FW09 Jewelry Collection By Chris Habana

Chris Habana FW09

Chris Habana FW09

If you haven’t come across the jewelry and accessories of Chris Habana you need to check out the work he’s put out for his FW09 collection. Named one of Gen Art’s “fresh faces” in 2004, Chris Habana has been creating jewelry that’s rebellious but not to be taken seriously. His approach to his craft is playful, creating contradictions through the combination of juxtaposing elements like light and dark, goth and pop.

The FW09 collection includes pieces from previous collections along with new laser cut pendents and cuffs, new hats, and pins.  Some of the pieces give you something to read rather than just to look at. Habana’s use of words are often a throwback to 70s, 80s, or 90s slang (which you’ll find on the hats that read “Rad,” “Snap,” and “Work!”) or simple phrases that evoke a bit of curiosity about the wearer from the eyes of the beholder. For this season, Habana sticks to silver and black to play up the light and dark motif. His more colorful designs can be found in previous collections and in his recent collaboration with A.ok by OAK.

The collaboration is a five piece collection featuring necklaces and earrings that pay tribute to pop artists Madonna, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Boy George and New Kids On The Block, with each piece inspired by something synonymous to each artist.

Chris Habana’s work knows no boundaries in terms of which sex can wear what. His line is for all, erasing the line between jewelry for her and jewelry for him. To check out the rest of the FW09 collection view the gallery below. To shop, view the Chris Habana stockists.

B-Side: “Jewelry Remixed”

B-Side Jewelry

B-Side Jewelry

Enamel, silver, brass… there’s something about these elements that calls to mind the jewelry of a women in her 50’s decked in bangles, rings, huge eyeglass frames, and a bright windbreaker suit on her way to a game of bingo (active imagination, much?). Those very elements are what jewelry designers Ken Leung and  Dana Chin use to create their eclectic line of earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets. Ken and Dana’s line B-Side is “jewelry remixed” with shapes, colors and images pulling from the advent of hip-hop and graffiti as an art form during NYC’s cultural revolution in the 80’s.

The jewelry is fun yet refined with designs that include brass plate pendants on multi-chain necklaces, unique “handcuff” bracelets, chandelier earrings with precious rough-cut stones, and cocktail rings. Many of the pieces from the Graffiti collection feature graffiti tags that read “Legalize art,” “art crimez,” and “onefortyfivesixty.” B-Side’s Cube collection uses the cube to create geometric styles that cascade and overlap. And since most of the jewelry is hand-made, there’s less chance of another girl having the same exact jewelry which makes for a truly unique piece. The jewelry line also includes tie-clips, cuff links and money clips that could work for both women and men that want to liven up the business attire.
