Paper Dolls Exhibit at FIFTY24LA – Opening Reception Recap

Last Thursday, the M.I.S.S ladies got on planes and hopped into cars to make our way down to Los Angeles for our first ever art show, “Paper Dolls” at FIFTY24LA Gallery. It was a great excuse to see the ladies since we mostly work over the phone and via email – when we’re all together watch out – we form like Voltron and tear shit up!

The show was a success with tons of people out and about for Downtown LA Art Walk, we had a steady stream of visitors and a few no-shows (damn LA parking!).  It was great to connect with people we haven’t seen in a while like Laura Knapp, Lanie from Hellz and the DMPC ladies; It was also nice to finally meet ladies that we’ve worked with but hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting in person like Jaq from Nola Darling, Sarah Morrison of internet fame and Melinda of Her Nails.  One of the highlights for me was finally meeting Estevan Oriol, whose store The Last Laugh is next door, who came by to check out the show.

The show would never have come together without the participation of so many talented artists whose work is so diverse.   I am proud to have such an eclectic showing of pieces all with varying interpretations of the paper doll (and many of them sans clothing!) – with many pieces coming in from around the country (and some other countries too!).  Many many thanks go out to all the participating artists: Adriana Yugovitch, Alice Mizrachi, Amanda Lopez, Branden Collins, Claw Money, Esther Kim, Farah Siozon, Fawn Gehweiler, Ilisha Helfman, Indie184, Insa, J. David Mckenney, Kelly Tunstall, Kerin.RoseKime BuzzelliLeola Bermanzohn, Lisa Perrin, Liz Sullivan, Magda Sayeg (Knitta Please), Martina Fugazzotto, Melly Elliott, Miss Kika, Mitsy Avila Ovalles, Molly Crabapple, Narcissister, Nicole Markoff, Nubby Twiglet, Paulina Quintana, Queen Andrea, Sahara Marina Borja, Shin Tanaka, Sofia Maldonado, Solarspace (Austin Pinon), Tone Tank, and Toofly.

A very big special thank you to the ladies who made this happen – Kimberly Jefferson and Lexx Valdez – as well as the L.A.-based M.I.S.S. interns Leilanie, Felicia and Ashley!  Big hugs! And last but not least, many thanks to the Upper Playground family, FIFTY24LA, Krista & Melinda.

Please check out the gallery below to see photos of some of our visitors and all of the art pieces (a few pieces are missing – we’re getting those photos and will update the post shortly!).  All of the items are for sale unless they are marked as SOLD.  If you are interested in purchasing a piece, please email us at miss@missomnimedia.com with the name of the piece and the artist who created it.

The show runs until March 3, 2010 so if you missed the opening you have some time to check it out and there’s also the February Downtown LA Art Walk on February 11, 2010.

Thanks for all of your support and we look forward to putting together more events that push the culture forward and bring ladies together.

xoxo

With the first ever M.I.S.S. curated art show just around the corner, the ladies in charge have decided to give you a sneak peek at the goodies you will be seeing. Each of the amazing artists showcased were asked to put their own unique spin on the iconic “paper doll” and the results, which cover several mediums, are quite impressive. Everything from photographs and illustrations to action figures and actual dolls were used to convey each artist’s own personal interpretation of the traditional fashion figure.

From the looks of these mere morsels, the show is going to be bananas. But how could it not be considering the array of artists put together by M.I.S.S editors Lexx Valdez and Kimberly Jefferson – great job ladies.

To see works in live and in person in their entirety, be sure to go to the event tomorrow night, January 14, 2010.

Bio:

Alice Mizrachi is  an artist, curator, social entrepreneur, educator and community organizer. Born and raised in Queens, New York, she has long been an active part of the art community near and outside her home town. Since her graduation from Parsons School of Design in 1999, she has exhibited her works in galleries worldwide such as Powerhouse in NYC,  Colette in Paris, Lab 101 in L.A,  Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis to name a few. Her works reflect a nostalgia for a city that once was- an urban subculture, gritty and thriving through a variety of buildings woven together as a colorful luminous cityscape; sometimes vibrant but always invoking a hidden tranquility.  With a knack for intensity, it is no wonder that Alice’s work is commissioned for a list of iconic companies including Gravis, The Washington Post and Shape Magazine.  Alice has also been featured in a variety of niche publications such as Giant Magazine,  Juxtapoz,  and Square Rootz for her hard work and dedication to the arts. She continues to paint murals all over the world as an additional part of her artistic ventures and collaborative partnerships. While educating today’s youth in central Harlem as a teaching artist, she is also keeping busy as a co-founder of the YOUNITY Arts Collective. Alice is not only known for her excellence as an artist and educator but also for her passion in uniting female artists and entrepreneurs through YOUNITY.

Letter from the Editor: 2010 New Year, New Beginnings

Letter from the Editor: 2010 New Year, New Beginnings

Letter from the Editor: 2010 New Year, New Beginnings

Hello all!
I hope you had a great holiday and I hope your new year got off to a great start. I love the new year because it’s a chance to evaluate what I’ve accomplished in the previous year, but more importantly, I like to plan out goals for the year. It’s always good to have a game plan and the new year is a great time to make one.

At M.I.S.S., we have some exciting new projects coming up this year. We’re slowly making changes to the site – you may have noticed that we moved our M.I.S.S. TV videos up to the top of the site. That’s a temporary fix as we are planning a better upgrade so you can watch more videos and have more to choose from. We’re constantly trying to make the site more use friendly and we hope that you appreciate the changes.

M.I.S.S. is also curating its first ever art show this month at Upper Playground’s FIFTY24LA Gallery. The group show, Paper Dolls, features artists interpretations of the classic – you guessed it – Paper Doll. We’re excited to feature works by illustrious artists and designers including: Alice Mizrachi, Amanda Lopez, Claw Money, Esther Kim, Farah Siozon, Fawn Gehweiler, Indie184, Insa, Kelly Tunstall, Kerin Rose, Kime Buzzelli, Lanie Alabanza-barcena, Mitsy Avila Ovalles, Narcissister, Nicole Markoff, Nubby Twiglet, Queen Andrea, Shin Tanaka, Toofly and many others. Curated by M.I.S.S’s very own Kim Jefferson & Lexx Valdez, the show features the works of artists they hand picked and felt could capture the essence of M.I.S.S. The show opens on Thursday, January 14th and we hope to see you there – stay tuned for more info and details.

This year promises to be exciting with new features and new additions to the M.I.S.S. family.  We hope that you’ll be coming back for more!  Let us know if there’s anything you want to see more of.  Wishing you the best in 2010!

xoxo

The Citrus Reports presents an interview with Toofly

M.I.S.S. Toofly was interviewed for a feature on Upper Playground’s online magazine, The Citrus Report. She talks about the difference and the pros/cons of learning in the streets versus learning in art school. She and Alice Mizrachi, her partner and co-founder of The Younity, also tell us about why they started The Younity and the big plans they have for 2009.  As one of M.I.S.S.’s original members and first cover artist, Toofly definitely has a special place in our hearts.  She continues to bring the ladies together through her art and we love her for it!  Read the interview feature here.
