Giant Robot is pleased to host a rare U.S. appearance by Tosa Novmichi at GR2. Tosa is half of the legendary Japan-based Maywa Denki music and art duo that creates its own ingenious and otherworldly instruments. In addition to touring and playing sold-out rock concerts around the world with their pneumatic, electronic, automated, and conceptual music devices, they create some of the world’s most interesting and interactive toys. Following the footsteps of the popular Knockman family (centered on the eponymous, wind-up figure that knocks its own head like a drum) comes the Otamatone. The piece looks like a musical note and plays like a Theremin. Fans of electronic music, cool toys, and otaku culture from Japan will not want to miss Tosa’s personal demonstration of the toy.

Legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano will make a rare U.S. appearance with his newest exhibit, DEVA LOKA, created especially for a U.S exhibition and named for the ancient Indian land of God. In a career spanning 27 years, RISK has impacted the evolution of graffiti as an art form in Los Angeles and worldwide. RISK gained major notoriety for his unique style and pushed the limits of graffiti further than any writer in L.A. had before: He was one of the first writers in Southern California to paint freight trains, and he pioneered writing on “heavens,” or freeway overpasses. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third Rail series of art shows, and later parlayed the name into the first authentic line of graffiti-inspired clothing.

Before he’d ever heard of graffiti, RISK was unconsciously writing it. As a kid, he filled sketchbook after sketchbook with images, not just of people and things but of letters too. He even had spray paint in his hand before ever applying it to a wall, using it to paint BMX bikes. “Even back then I think I was addicted to spray paint,” he recalls. “I just loved painting with it.”

Visit RISK’s limited-edition print series just released at www.riskrock.com. Each screen print is signed and numbered by the artist.

In August, the LA Times noted Hurley’s “commitment to lowbrow art”—2009 alone has seen clothing collaborations with Ron English, Winston Smith, Robert Williams, Alex Pardee, Todd Schorr, and rock photographer Lisa Johnson, as well as a collection with Motorhead. Since July 2009, Hurley has brought exclusive interviews (video and written) with the most exciting contemporary artists of today to Hurley.com.

Artists profiled so far include: ABOVE, DALEK, Swoon, Todd Schorr, Lisa Johnson, Natalia Fabia, Specter, Pat Martinez, Mike Stilkey, Jeremy Fish, Mario Desa, Adam Wallacavage, Alex Chiu, MAC, Logan Hicks, Marc Dean Veca, Rocky Grimes, Andy Kehoe and Rich Colman. Hurley’s website has also profiled up-and-coming music acts like Nighthorse, Jayne Doe, Alberta Cross, Imaad Wasif, Holy Grail as well as punk old-timers like The Gears. The site has run instructional videos teaching users how to ‘Make a ‘Zine’, and ‘How To Stencil’ (with artist Jason Filipow), a nod to the punk, DIY roots of the company’s founder Bob Hurley.

In August 2009 the artist DALEK created a giant mural for Hurley’s 225 Forest store in Laguna Beach. In December, he created an all-new mural for the space. In November, graffiti artist PUSH painted a mural in Hurley’s new store in Irvine.
Full time at Hurley are artist Jason Maloney (who handles artist outreach and whose own work can be seen in many new Hurley stores), and Adrian Nyman, senior vice president of brand image, who made his name spearheading Levi Strauss’ high-profile collaborations with the Warhol Foundation and Damien Hirst.

Hurley’s commitment to underground art was first demonstrated with its “Against The Grain” art show in 2006, in which Bob Hurley brought together some of the surf world’s most iconic board shapers with stars of the low brow art world, creating a legendary traveling art show that highlighted the symbiosis between art, punk rock and surf culture. Winston Smith, Keith Morris from the Circle Jerks, Mike Clark from Suicidal Tendencies, Arturo Vega (artistic director for the Ramones), Jack Grisham from TSOL, Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo created custom art for a series of one-off surf boards, all now collectors’ items.

Hurley Art publishes one new artist interview and a video feature on Hurley.com each week. View some here:

Giant Robot is proud to present Diplopia, a joint art show featuring Eleanor Davis and Katherine Guillen.
Eleanor Davis is a cartoonist who makes work for both adults and children. The award-winning Atlanta, GA-based artist grew up on children’s comics, entered the Sequential Arts program at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and makes painstakingly crafted, whimsical, and non-condescending comics for young readers. Her most recent studio artwork involves pen and ink with watercolor with some gouache. Like the panels of her stories, it is bold yet full of mystery, with recurring themes that include “humanity in the face of destruction, people laughing and crying, etc.”

Los Angeles-based artist Katherine Guillen creates paintings and prints that explore the tenuous connections between the urban and natural environments. Her most recent work–which resembles landscapes but is more symbolic than picturesque–investigates the way structures work as language on the landscape and how we use architecture to order nature and defy mortality. She says, “I am fascinated by the human desire to create, build, and idealize, which is both our redemption and our failing.” In addition to making gouache and mixed media paintings on paper, she will be showing some papier-mache pieces.

For this show, the longtime friends are also creating a number of large collaborative panels.

Jan. 16 is the opening reception 6-10pm, the address is as follows:

Michael Wolf: The Transparent City
Chicago, like many of the world’s great urban centers, has recently undergone a surge in new construction, grafting a new layer of architectural experimentation onto those of past eras. Bringing his unique perspective on changing urban environments to a city renowned for its architecture, Michael Wolf chose to photograph Chicago’s central downtown area, focusing specifically on issues of voyeurism and the contemporary urban landscape in flux. His first body of work to address an American city, Michael Wolf: The Transparent City opened at the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College Chicago (MoCP), in November 2008. The show at Aperture marks the second U.S. venue for the exhibition. The work, which is accompanied by a book of the same title copublished by Aperture and MoCP last fall, was created as part of the Chicago-based U.S. Equities Realty Artist-in-Residence Program, in collaboration with MoCP.

Whereas Wolf’s prior series concentrated on the “architecture of density,” this most recent work invites the viewer to examine the transparency and fluidity of the new American cityscape. Juxtaposing humanizing details within the surrounding geometry of the urban landscape, fragments of everyday life—digitally distorted and hyper-enlarged—are snatched surreptitiously via telephoto lenses. Think Edward Hopper meets Blade Runner. In Michael Wolf: The Transparent City, Wolf’s work resonates with all the formalism of the constructed, architectural work for which he is known, and emphasizes his ongoing engagement with the idea of how modern life unfolds within the framework of the ever-growing contemporary city.

Michael Wolf: The Transparent City

Barbara Crane: Private Views

Opening Reception:

Thursday, November 12, 6:00-8:00pm

Barbara Crane: Private Views
In the early 1980s, photographer Barbara Crane embarked on a photographic project shot during Chicago’s various summer festivals. Armed with a Super Speed Graphic camera and Polaroid film, Crane waded in close to the revelers and focused on capturing the details of clothing and hairstyles, but most importantly, gesture. The images are tightly cropped and terrifically alive, viscerally bringing us into the crush of people eating, drinking, and enjoying the crowd dynamic—an incredible inventory of private gestures performed in public spaces.

The collective effect of the images in Barbara Crane: Private Views is mesmerizing and intensely compelling, creating a palpable sensuality from image to image—an astonishing document, not of a particular event or personality, but of something far less tangible: the public expression of euphoria. Barbara Crane: Private Views is a celebration of the classic 1980s Polaroid snapshot with an experimental flair; Crane’s mixture of natural light and flash combined with her use of Polaroid film highlights the primary colors of ’80s fashion, which still feels hip and contemporary today.

An accompanying book of the same title was published by Aperture in the spring 2009.

Jeremy Fish’s new exhibit “Weathering the Storm” opened at the Laguna Art Museum last weekend.  Juxtapoz Magazine was there to document the event and the art.

From Sunday, November 8th to January 17, 2010, the Laguna Art Museum will feature a new installation by Jeremy Fish entitled, Weathering the Storm.

This will be the first museum exhibition for Jeremy Fish. He will use Laguna Art Museum’s upstairs galleries to create an installation with symbols and characters that he has been developing over the last ten years.

Weathering the Storm is a timely exhibition that is largely about transformation and rebirth through struggle. Deliberately drawing from our own current economic and political events and its impact on us socially and emotionally, Fish’s characters will reveal a narrative of evolution through struggle to obtain a more magnificent and resilient place. In this exhibition, Fish will create paintings with hand carved wood frames, three-dimensional figures for the gallery wall installation, and sculptures.

Fish’s iconography generally consists of a fairy tale world inhabited by beavers, skulls, and birds which he has developed in part as a response to the influence that popular culture, cartooning, and literature like the Brothers Grimm, has had on him. Additionally, Fish created a limited edition print, Stormy Weather, for the Museum. Upper Playground will be releasing an exclusive tee featuring the Stormy Weather artwork shortly.

It’s not every day that a contemporary perfume bottle makes earns a spot in one of the world’s top museums.  But the curators of the Musée d’Orsay’s new exhibition, Art Nouveau Revival, have selected Prada Parfums’ Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger as the design representation of the movement’s impact on current fashion culture. The perfume’s design is derived from Prada’s Fall/Winter 2003 collection that served as a deconstruction of a classic Art Nouveau wallpaper print. Prada’s pattern will be exhibited alongside work by artists like Man Ray, Salvador Dalí and Aubrey Beardsley. The show will be on display in Paris through February 4, 2010.

EGO “Light in the Darkness” – Solo exhibit

Address: FLATCOLOR 528 1st Avenue South Seattle WA, 98104

Exhibit Dates: October 1st 2009 – October 31st 2009

This exhibit actually ends soon! I totally forgot to go through my pile of club event/art show fliers last week’s post. Better late than never, what I really enjoy about this particular exhibit by EGO is the color usage. The contrast between the light colors used to paint something that would be considered dark. The show is properly named “Light in the Darkness” and from what I know, most paintings are sold! However, this shouldn’t stop you from going to see the paintings live and in person.

Art Radar - 10.22.09 -Andrew Brandou - Culver City CA

Corey Helford Gallery Prsents: Andrew Brandou “In the Garden of Mystic”

Opening Reception: October 31st

Address: Corey Helford Gallery – 8522 Washington Boulevard Culver City, CA 90232

Opening on Halloween night, Los Angeles artist Andrew Brandou unveils his second solo show at Corey Helford Gallert entitled “In The Garden of The Mystic”. Influenced by 1960’s posters, music and psychedelia, Brandou’s new work takes a walk on the wild side and a more organic narrative ensues. The artist’s iconic flower motifs, skulls, bunnies and boxes transform into a kaleidoscope of stunning psychonautic imagery. Ornate gold leaf accents decorate mind-expanding dreamscapes where the ego merges into the id, fear is released and beauty resides. The exhibition will also include a rare series of limited-edition silkscreens on wood block based on vintage rock posters. Open to the public, the reception for “In The Garden of The Mystic” takes place on Saturday, October 31st , and the show will be on view until November 18, 2009.

Stencil artist Above has gone on a little trip to Paris, France and has left quite the mark behind him.  “Arrow Kite”  is probably in my top 5 of his works.  If you are interested, hit up his Vimeo account and watch some of those vids.

Bridge the Divide: Art on the Berlin Wall

Bridge the Divide: Art on the Berlin Wall

Bridge the Divide: Art on the Berlin Wall

Italian street/stencil artist Above has done it again – on the Berlin Wall! Seeing as 2009 marks the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the wall, it’s both clever and apropos. Above scouts urban areas for the installation of stencil works, often combining text with other imagery, reminiscent of British street artist Banksy. He then films the public’s interaction with the piece and voila, performance art (of sorts).  Bridge the Divide appropriates the infamous Pink Floyd lyric “just another brick in the wall” to comment on the dissolution of the Iron Curtain. Love it.

Above hits Europe

Street artist Above has hit the road again, embarking on what’s sure to be another epic tour of painting, stenciling, and general havoc across Europe. Well known for his social and political stencils, witty word play pieces, and the infamous spinning arrow mobiles (hung in cities across the globe), he’s been kind enough to give us a heads up to what he’s been working on.

Above hits Europe

Above hits Copenhagen, Denmark with The Naked Truth.

Above hits Europe

“The Naked Truth” - a mixture of stencil and proverbial wordplay...

First stop was Copenhagen, Denmark, where Above worked on the site-specific installation titled “The Naked Truth” – a mixture of stencil and proverbial wordplay, along with the physical elements of the shower head and curtain. Taking into account how the piece would interact with the surroundings, Above made a point of tucking it away so the “naked truth is only found by those who look”.

Peep the vid to have a closer look:

Next up, a set of three works – “Ears, Tears and Fears” – in Madrid, Spain. Where better to have a piece featuring a flamenco guitarist and dancer?

Above in Europe

The flamenco dancer is dependant on the sounds of the guitar to tease her ears and make her dance.

Above in Europe

The juggler on the unicycle by Above encourages it's audience to rise above their fears.

The three characters all interact and depend on each other for the piece work. A sombre guitarist plays in the hopes his music will make the woman dance, as Above says, “helping ease his tears”. In turn, the flamenco dancer is dependant on the sounds of the guitar to tease her ears and make her dance. “The relationship and co-dependency of both characters in need of the others interaction to find happiness is sensual and vulnerable.” The final piece with the juggler on the unicycle is a bit trickier, so I’ll leave Above to explain: “I have been searching for over 9 months for such a situation! I finally found what I was looking for. This character and piece completes the Ears, Tears, & Fears word-play.” Interpret that as you wish!

I definitely recommend checking out Above’s site – the amount of countries he’s left his mark on is insane, not to mention jealousy-inducing!

“Giving To The Poor” Above Giclee Print

A few months back we posted about Above’s “Giving To The Poor” piece that was cleverly placed near an ATM. Now, he’s taking his concept a bit further and acting as the “Robin Hood” of graffiti by taking an active role in helping those less fortunate. Above is selling the “GIVING TO THE POOR” print at an affordable cost and he’s donating 100% of ALL PROFITS to two homeless shelters. By giving away his profits, he’s hoping to get as many people involved in this benevolent project as possible. Above personally carefully selected the Homeless shelters because of their long-standing active role in the homeless community. The two homeless shelters, E.C.S. Shelter and C.H. Center, stand out among others because they accept and strive to help those without a home regardless of RELIGION, RACE, POLITICS or SEXUAL PREFERENCE. During this time of giving, help out those in need any way you can.  With these prints, you get a great print, but you’re also helping a great cause.  You can purchase the print here and details on the print and ordering info after the jump.

The New Robin Hood

Above has gone from arrow mobiles twirling mysteriously on electrical wires across cities around the world, to giant word-play pieces across South America.  His newest encroachment onto the public space is stenciling.  In true Above fashion, there’s more than meets the eye and a clever message is involved.  Check out his “Stealing From The Rich” piece in Lisbon, Portugal.
