After the disastrous travel day that was St. Patty’s Day Parade traffic, and successive layovers in Ft. Lauderdale, Memphis AND Greenville, the entire M.I.S.S. x Revery Media fam finally made it out to the South by Southwest Film Festival on late Wednesday in one piece (sorta!). With our equipment and schedule of the showcases in hand, we made our way to our hotel, stashed our crapola in the luxury that only a Days Inn in Austin, TX can provide (*sarcasm, anyone?*), and decamped for East 6th St!

The South by Southwest Music and Media Conference, now in its 24th year, is one of the major must-attend yearly musical festivals. With the focus on spotlighting new music, labels, and music-industry media trends, the Austin, Texas festival has grown from a small gathering to a nation-wide music frenzy. With thousands traveling from all over the country to attend the 5 day festival, the liberal college town in Central Texas becomes a mecca for hipster kids and those that love them for one week in March. Seriously– being at baggage claim at the Austin Airport was basically the same experience one has while riding down Bedford Ave in Williamsburg on a fixed gear. All we’re saying– beards were everywhere!

SXSW Day 1

The first day of the festival rolled along rather nicely. The Brooklyn Vegan Showcase blew the speakers out at Club Deville, with bands The Middle East and Dawes kicking things off. Elsewhere, NPR brought a bit of class to the night with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Broken Bells. Over at Aces Lounge, 2 AM Club, Mike Posner, and Bun B killed it. And, if you haven’t come across this tidbit yet in your morning blog troll, Nasty Nas straight ANNIHILATED the Levis/Fader Fort.

For us, though, the highlight of the day was definitely taking in all that the closed-down East 6th street had to offer. From hipster galore to drunk St. Paddy’s day … well, you know whats… the variety of people coming together to celebrate new music was a beautiful thing. We felt the love!!

Check in on M.I.S.S. for daily updates, including exclusive photos and video interviews with your favorite artists (trust us kiddies, we have some big ones coming) for the duration of SXSW… because it’s only Day 1! 4 more left and counting!

I was taken aback when going through the submissions this week– there were so many powerful, strong, opinionated pieces that I felt really taken aback. With overwhelming positivity or negativity, the fashion community is finding it’s voice– and making themselves heard!

The fashion community is great at sharing the voice of others, and we’ve got several fabulous interviews to prove it. From Derek Lam at Poetic & Chic and White Rabbit’s interview with Irish woman Sinead Doyle (along with my own interview with Amelia Arsenic at Dramatis Personae), there are voices for everyone. We’ve got bloggers ranting on the lack of premium denim in plus-sizes at Denim Debutante (hell yeah!), and some showcasing inspirational figures like KOOS (at M.I.S.S.), Philip Crangi (at Eternal Masquerade), and Maria Felix (at Jewelry Whore).

There were so, so many great links this week, it really was hard to narrow it down to 2o. Check out the full listing of Links à la Mode here.

As a writer paper and pen quality are of grave importance. We all know that Lupe loves his Moleskine paper with his gold watch. So do I! The Italian company is the producer or high quality notebooks, planners, and sketchbooks. Their books house the lyrics, sketches, and appointments of big shots worldwide. Now, the fine folks at Moleskine are letting you take a peek inside the private sketchbooks of some of the world’s top designers.

The Hand of the Designer is a collection of 462 reproductions of sketches straight from the phalanges of 150 internationally recognized designers. Ideas from the brains of Bouroullec Brothers, Michael Graves, Hella Jongerius, Karim Rashid, and many others are all spilled on the pages of this one-of-a-kind book.

The layout of the publication resembles the signature Moleskine sketchbook. This widely recognized book features a hard, rounded corner cover, elastic band, and ribbon place holder. The only deviation is the cover color. The reason for the change in color is to allow consumers to distinguish between the white cover The Hand of the Designer book and the black Moleskine sketchpad that comes as a gift.

Release of The Hand of the Designer will be accompanied by a special exhibition featuring all the original sketches during Milan Designer Week. Following the exhibition, the sketches will be available for auction. All proceeds go to the Italian National Trust.

What: The Hand of the Designer Exhibition

Where: Villa Necchi Campiglio and Triennale Bovisa (Milan, Italy)

When: April 14-19, 2010

Auction: Villa Necchi Campiglio (Milan, Italy) on May 13, 2010

LeBasse Projects is hitting you with a double dose of dope in the coming weeks. The new contemporary art gallery in the Culver City Arts District has made a name for itself already. Its known as one of the premiere galleries for the next generation of artists. Now, they bring to you Is Everybody Happy?, the first solo exhibition of Greek artist Alexandros Vasmoulakis to hit the States.

Vasmoulakis’ desires to reveal images from social revolts and personalized strife. Obviously the title has a tinge of sarcasm. In this exhibition, viewers are welcomed into a satrical world with women as the central characters. Trust me, the work is fresh to def. I think I have a new artist to add to my list of favorites!

There is nothing I love more than hot chicks and bright colors. Latina artist Sophia Maldonado has combined the two in a major way. This talented chica conjured up a gigantic mural of strong Latina women and boy is it sweet! The piece is on display in Times Square as part of the 42nd Street Project. You can view the mural at 215 West 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenue until April 30, 2010.

Heres a video featuring Sophia, the mural itself, and the tedious process of displaying it in NYC. The crew at LOOSEWORLD are to thank for this feature. Thanks guys!

The apple doesnt fall from the tree. We’ve all heard it, but now I’ve seen it. Victor Demarchelier, son of famed fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier, spent the majority of this childhood on the set of photo shoots for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. Victor has now picked up the camera and capturing breathtaking images of his own. These images are currently being displayed in New York City in his first solo show at Clic Bookstore & Gallery. Creating Images features 20 photos taken by Victor over the past several years. The high fashion look of the photos make this exhibition a must see.

Prospect Heights, BK. Some Sunday in February (they were all grey).

What were you thinking before you took the photo?

That I do not want to imply ‘noose’ with the scarf, that this is going to look like a set-up, and that JJ is continuously generous with his face. with me. I suppose that is just an extension of him, so it makes sense.

What were you thinking after you took the photo?

He blinked. And so did the camera. And then I thought the photo would be a wash because lord knows the countless photos we’ve seen of people with half-opened or half-closed or totally closed eyes that look less like ‘a moment’ than like crap.

What’s interesting to you about the photo?

This was not a wasted frame. His punim. That he didn’t know his scarf was in the bushes. That I have only started shooting him, in the 10 years I’ve known him.

What camera did you use?

Mamiya 645. CLAAAAAAANG! (that’s the shutter).

Drinking Bailey’s while out frolicking with the rest of your heathen drunk friends isn’t exactly the most manly/Irish thing to do because of it’s creamy, sweet, dessert-like nature. Usually, St. Patty’s Day festivities include tons o’ Guinness and Irish Whiskey. At the advanced stages, there are Car Bombs. Although too decadent for drunkfests, Irish Cream is still so damn delicious. Ask anyone who’s slept with Colin Farrell.

When I lived in Amsterdam, my friends’ and I spent a night concocting homemade Egg Nog which is very similar to Irish Cream and it was dreamy–I’ll never forget how much better it was than store bought. Significantly better. Like, HOLY SHIT better. I came up with this Irish Cream recipe the other night and poured a little out for my A’dam homies who are scattered all around the world now. It being the Day of Saint Patrick, I figured this the appropriate time to reveal the recipe. Plus, I should represent my Scotch-Irish half. The Korean half will still enjoy this, even if it’s lactose intolerant. Oh well.

DREAMY IRISH CREAM

1 cup Irish Whiskey (I’d say Jameson, but I used to be partial to Bushmill’s and I’ve been known to tip some Tullamore Dew)

1 bar dark chocolate, high cacao content, 60-70% is fine

1c + 4 Tb sweetened condensed milk (10 oz)

1c evaporated milk (8 oz)

1c heavy cream

1 espresso shot or strong, brewed coffee

1/2 tsp natural vanilla extract

In the top of a double boiler*, melt chocolate, stirring constantly until smooth. Remove from heat and add the espresso shot or strong brewed coffee. Pour a cup of whiskey into the chocolate/coffee mixture and stir. Transfer to a large bowl. Gradually stir in the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and vanilla. Stir in the cream and remaining whiskey.

Refrigerate immediately. It actually tastes best after a week or so and it keeps for a super long time. To serve, put some in a martini shaker and then over ice. Or, to be truly decadent, pour some over chocolate ice cream. Oh man.

*Note: Don’t go out and buy a double boiler. It’s easy to replicate with a medium pot, filled about halfway with water and a metal bowl to fit over top. You want the boiling water to not necessarily be completely covering the bottom of the bowl, but rather, heating it up with steam. This allows for indirect heat which will safely melt your chocolate. Try it, I’m right.

If you’re in NYC tonight, I’ll be at Lucky Strike slappin’ my knee, blowing a fife, and rubbing a fiddle starting around 9:30pm. I may dj some, too.

The good people over at M·A·C were kind enough to share their facecharts from the Fall 2010 shows during Milan Fashion Week. Today’s facecharts include: Giles, Gareth Pugh, Balmain, and Manish Arora, whose shows took place on Wednesday, March 3rd and Thursday, March 4th.

Giles

M·A·C artist, Miranda Joyce created a lovely, creamy, and sexy look for the models at Giles. Said the artist, ” She’s a Hitchcock heroine with certain edge”. M·A·C Cream Colour Base in Pearl (mixed with Strobe Cream) was used to highlight the planes of the face. Sculpting Powder in Bone Beige or Blush in Cheek or Pinch O’Peach was applied according to models’ skin tone to slightly flush and sculpt the cheeks. Joyce then applied Cream Colour Base in Mid Tone Sepia (blended into the crease of the eyelids). Cream Colour Base in Pearl and Strobe Cream were once again blended together to highlight the inner corners of the eyes and lids. Mascara X in Brown was applied for naturally defined lashes, while Impeccable Brow Pencil lightly filled in the brows. Lipstick in Honey Love was applied to the corners of the lips for shape. Cream Colour Base was touched onto the center of the lips with a coat of Lipglass in Clear blended over the entire lip.

Gareth Pugh

M·A·C artist, Alex Box created a “perfectly deadly Android beauty”, for the look at Gareth Pugh. M·A·C Studio Sculpt Foundation was applied as a base. Iridescent Powder in Silver Dusk was applied on cheekbones and bridge of nose, while Studio Sculpt Foundation was layered over the top to soften the sparkle. Micronized Airbrush Formula in Black Black was airbrushed on to forehead for a somber effect. #42 and #44 lashes were glued together at the inner corners, flipped upside down, and applied slightly above the lash line. Creme Liner in Pro Black was used to fill the gap along the inner half of eye only between lash line and false lash. Brow Set in Clear was applied in an upwards motion on brows. Box kept lips minimal using only Studio Sculpt Foundation over Lip Conditioner to mute out natural lip color.

Balmain

M·A·C artist, Tom Pecheux’s inpiration for Balmain’s Fall 2010 show was the models themselves. Said Pecheux,” I want to make them even more perfect by giving power to each of the facial elements. It’s the perfect skin, brow, eye, and lip.” Pecheux applied M·A·C Face and Body Foundation with Select Sheer Loose Powder on top to set. Eye Shadow in Rice Paper was used to highlight the tops of the cheekbones and Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Deep contoured the cheekbones. Eye Shadow in Rice Paper and Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Medium Dark was blended on to eyelids. Eye Pencil in Coffee was then smudged along the lash lines with a #266 brush. Pro Lash Mascara in Charcoal Brown was applied to curled lashes, while Brow Set in Clear was applied to groom the brows. Pecheux kept lips bare by only adding a touch of Lip Conditioner to the mouth.

Manish Arora

“I wanted the makeup to look like colored lights on the face.” said M·A·C artist, Kabuki, of the look at Manish Arora. “Very youthful and psychedelic, I imagined Louise Brooks going down a rabbit hole and finding herself at a techno rave. It’s a celebration of color.” Kabuki applied M·A·C Select Cover-Up Concealer all over the face including under and over the eye brows to blank them out. Paintstick in Primary Yellow was used on the inner and outer corners of eyes (with edges blurred). Cream Colour Base in Orange Alarm was placed in the center of the eyelid (from lash to slightly above the crease and blended up). Pro Invisible Set Powder was dusted on top to set color. Chromaline in Cyan was used to draw a very thin arched brow and lashes were left bare. Kabuki applied Lipglass in Pink Poodle (precisely applied) then followed up with a coat of Lipglass in Clear for added shine.

Yuli Ziv is leading the way in fashion through her many endeavours. She is the co-founder and Editor-In-Chief of MyItThings.com—an online user generated fashion magazine and community. She is also a founding member of Style Coalition, an alliance of independent online publishers in the fashion vertical. Yuli is an avid speaker on the topic of social media and technology as they relate to the fashion industry. She has been quoted by WWD, Forbes, Business Week and AP.

Yuli’s presence in the fashion industry and online media has led her to organize and lead Fashion 2.0 discussion panels and networking event series in NYC, bringing together the fashion and technology worlds.

The next event, being held on March 23rd, 2010, will bring together leaders of the online fashion revolution such as fashion bloggers, new media publishers, entrepreneurs, industry insiders, fashion PR reps, and web savvy trendsetters.
Below, Yuli gives us some insight on what some of her favorite things are…

Women Making History: Yuli Ziv

We were thrilled to be able to get some questions in to Yuli. Enjoy our Q&A with her below:

M.I.S.S.: What woman, besides your mom or grandmother, do you find inspirational?

Jeanne d’Arc.

M.I.S.S.: How did you get your start in blogging and social media?

I’ve worked in the online industry for the past 10 years, always focusing on the next big thing. I fell in love with the immediacy of blogging and the ability to reach such wide audiences. Later, I realized the biggest aspect of blogging is the ability to build communities and this was the point when my fascination with social media began.

M.I.S.S.: When did you make the leap from creating/blogging for My It Things to creating Style Coalition? Why did you start Style Coalition? What was your goal?

After running MyItThings for a while, I met so many amazing publishers and bloggers in the space who had similar goals and challenges. As a group we could be much more powerful, both while promoting industry standards and when creating new revenue channels for ourselves. Since the launch of Style Coalition in the early 2008 the support of the publishers, brands and press has been overwhelming.

Women Making History: Yuli Ziv

M.I.S.S.: In addition to Style Coalition, you’ve had an integral role in promoting social media as a tool for the fashion industry. Where did the idea for Inside The Tents come from?

Inside the tents – our portal for live NY Fashion Week coverage – combined two of the current biggest online trends: access to insiders-only information and real time coverage. It was a natural and inevitable step for the fashion industry to take and im excited to be part of the change.

M.I.S.S.: Our editors recently attended the Fashion 2.0 Social Media Awards. How would you rate the event? Will you make it an annual event?

The event was a huge success both offline (despite the snowstorm) and online, with thousands of votes casted by fashion fans online, and a feature in WWD. What surprised me most was the enthusiasm with which the nominated brands promoted the awards via their own social media channels, twittering, posting on facebook, their own blogs and newsletters. It really proved the power of social media and we definitely plan to establish the awards as an annual tradition.

M.I.S.S.: How has social media changed the fashion industry?

The biggest change was the democratization of fashion – from bloggers who influence opinions and sales to consumers who rate, review and recommend – this industry is no more a hierarchical top-bottom empire.

M.I.S.S.: What is new on the social media horizon? Any new products that you are excited about?

Mobile space is finally living up to its expectations from few years ago – location based social networks seems to be the big buzz nowadays and they are excellent platforms for fashion and retail brands to turn the store shopping into social experiences.

M.I.S.S.: Do you think that brands that don’t embrace social media will be left behind?

I don’t think its ever too late to join the game, there is enough data and case studies for fashion brands to start defining their own strategy and there is plenty of room for innovation.

Yuli Ziv and friends at an event...

M.I.S.S.: What’s your favorite project that you’ve worked on?

A project I’m working on right now, which still has to remain confidential. It’s a new medium and dimension for me, and I can’t wait to make it happen!

M.I.S.S.: Who do you want to work with?

I would love to work with Vogue on their social media strategy. They seem to be way behind other players in the space, yet have most potential. Challenges like this one truly excite me.

M.I.S.S.: What part of being a writer/speaker/social media expert is the most challenging and do you dislike the most?

Wearing many hats can be challenging at times, but I feel it’s something that is very common these days, when more and more people choose to build their own, entrepreneural path.

M.I.S.S.: Any advice for ladies who are just starting out in a career path in fashion and media?

Research the market well in order to see what attracts you most, then define your own niche. Focus and perfect your uniqueness without worrying about competition. Have a goal larger than your own success.

Thanks so much, Yuli!

Text: Kat Popiel

Miami is one of those cities that conjures up a distinct visual palette of pink flamingoes, almost naked sun kissed bodies and kaleidoscopic cocktail mixtures. Yet just like any girl on the top cheerleading squad who gets good grades and dates the Ken look-alike, there is mad criticism. With the unfortunate displeasure of being defined by the wacky and sometimes tacky world of South Beach Miami, the city sports Spring Break fiascos, countless conferences full of sometimes below average executives and has amassed a colorful collection of party hungry animals.

With big winners such as Art Basel and Winter Music Conference appearing against a backdrop of swaying palm trees and sandy beaches, always brimming with a mix of Euros and out of town hipsters, you know it’s going to blow your mind, tickle your senses and have you shaking your booty. Up on the horizon is Winter Music Conference, another Miami love affair sure to boast a similar onset of debauchery and air horns. Descending upon every available cornerstone of music equipment are 1,910 artists and DJs with over 500 events to choose from in only just 5 days. Yet in the case of the most recent Art Basel in December; whilst the events schedule is more overwhelming than a sample sale at Barneys, fusing a mix of traditional fairs with underground satellite gallery launches, most of this might appear on the beach but the concentration of activity is over the bridge in the Design District. Sculptures appear on unexpected corners; there are film screenings, exhibits in store locations, pop up boutiques, concerts on the rooftops of bars and secret eating clubs. It brags an attendance rate of 40,000 people over a three day period, injecting glamour, the arrival of intellectuals from a spectrum of perspectives, show-off fashionistas, curious tourists and yes, even hardcore business dealers there with ‘Ka-Ching’ ringing in their ears – all in the name of art. Alongside this blanket of conductivity are international showrooms for design, luxury store outposts for brands such as Christian Lamboutin and Marni and specialty spaces by local brands such as Friends With You and the OHWOW Gallery.

Apart from these noisy festivals and sparkly pods of style, at the underbelly of Miami is a thriving creative community who don’t just bask in the sun, challenging the assumption that Miami is just about The Strip. It seems that whilst Miami might appear to be an oasis of social schizophrenia at times, all that glitters can be gold, and past the immediate reflection is a place full of hidden treasures. Here we talk to Juan Herrera, manager of the newly re-opened Cinema Nightclub, who talks about his promotional efforts to counteract stereotypes of what Miami is really like; New York music producer Michna, who spent his college years at University of Miami, explains how Miami has a unifying spirit amidst its creative folk and London bred Blue Logan provides his thoughts on his first time journey to the world of South Beach.

Chinese culture is the bomb dot com. Everything about it intrigues me. The Chinese are family-oriented and place a lot of emphasis on nature and wellness. Much of the art from this corner of the globe reflects such values. The creations from Ma Shouzhen are no different. Don’t let the dainty photos fool you though. Ma had a life that was fit for a segment on “The Secret Life of Women.”

"Narcissus." Ma stuck to her Chinese roots and often painted items from nature.

Ma Shouzhen was born in Jinling, China in 1548. No, her birth name wasn’t Ma. Her legal name was Xianglan, but she also went by Xuan’er and Yuejiao. Growing up in pre-modern China was difficult for Ma. The iron fist of the Ming Dynasty was banging hard upon China. The art scene was male dominated and ladies got no respect. Some women took matters into their own hands and made a way out of no way. Since art by women wasn’t respected during the duration of Ma’s life, they got exposure by not disclosing their gender or by working as courtesans who served the male artists of the time. Ma chose the latter.

The simplicity and monochromatic color theme are characteristics of Ma's signature style. This painting also features Ma's favorite thing to paint, an orchid.

Ma was considered a romantic figure who offered her poetry and painting to her clients in addition to a happy ending. Although her line of work was taboo, she stayed true to Chinese culture by dedicating her talent to depicting scenes from nature. Her favorite things to paint were orchids. Ma’s style consisted of painting in delicate ink monochrome. Orchids were extremely popular with courtesan painters because they were fragrant plants that blossomed in seclusion. The courtesans could identify.

Although Ma didn’t get the respect that was owed to her, she made amazing art. She didn’t let her lower class status or the side eyes of society keep her in the shadows. Her dirt was done in the dark, but her art shined light on her inner peace, confidence, and beauty. To Ma Shouzhen I bow in respect. She gave society the middle finger and made things happen. No matter what.

I have a really boring, generic suitcase. Navy with not much else going on. Even though I ALWAYS attach one of the little free luggage tags they have at the airport there’s been more than one fool that hasn’t bothered to check and walked away with my gear. Cue frantic racing out of the departure lounge in fear that the culprit gets starts heading home before they realise, or worse, jump on another flight!

Yak Pak rolling luggage sets

Yak Pak have the solution to this “baggage befuddlement” – a new three piece rolling luggage set in their bright signature prints. The three sizes clock in at 5346in³, 2996.25in³ and 2132 in³ – so PLENTY of space to cram in the multiple changes of outfits us ladies need when we travel (because honestly, why pack light if it isn’t totally necessary?). The luggage sets also feature large front zipper chambers, organisational panels, pen sleeves, key clips and a bunch of other nifty little pockets.

The kind peeps at Yak Pak understand that travel ain’t cheap so with that in mind they’ve priced these babies from $49.99 – $99.99. Check them out over at the Yak Pak online store.
