The summer has gotten hot and it seems like most people are on vacation or waiting to get there. This hasn’t stopped us for a minute from putting on our masks and preparing a grand summer showcase for you. First we bring you two brand new prints from Miss Van. The first, ‘Oldies II,’ is based on a classic painting of hers from 2005 while the other is the beginning of a new series entitled ‘Mascaras.’ And for all of your who might be traveling you know that no trip is complete without a few postcards. Miss Van is freshly back from her recent trips to Brazil and Mexico and she’s taking this opportunity to release the brand new “Mascarade” set of nine limited edition postcards, portraits based on her own travels. Masks are the theme, especially those that reveal more than they hide.

This makes me happy and horny all at the same time. There is definitely a strong presence of femininity and a dark sultry feel to Miss Van’s work.

TOUR-FLYER-FRONT

Oh my hotness! I think I’ve had a crush on Jeremy Fish for a few years now. Don’t judge, he’s a hot bearded artist, I cannot resist. Well he’s hitting the road and his last stop, MY STOP. Seattle! He’s on the lone and dusty road with new works in tow in a rape, uh, party/merchandise van.

I really hate over saturation of the same old same old regurgitation all over the web. But being that KAWS is to be the Andy Warhol of our generation,  I couldn’t help but post this since it runs ALL THE WAY UNTIL JANUARY!

LINDER

It would seem that Linder’s new book GOOD COP / BAD COP was designed site specifically for the gallery, however, the inspiration came from abroad. Ever the aspiring underground archaeologist, Linder’s newly discovered cave is a trove of saucy Polaroids chronicling one man’s forays into the red, taken mainly in Rio de Janeiro. Linder acquired the archive in a storage locker auction in Berkeley and concluded that they were all taken by one man, a retired African American police officer from Sacramento.

Here, Linder presents his reproductions of polaroids of the subjects chosen for reproduction in the book. An avid hunter but an ardent hater of taxidermy, Linder presents his ” repaired ” taxidermies as sculpture. On the opposite wall, figures from Linder’s fiberglass menagerie stare pensively at the two-dimensional taxidermy across the way on the other wall; duct-taped wild boar heads staring vacantly at the low tech digital prints of carnal trophies. The catalog contains an essay by Paul Karlstrom about Charles’ work and methods.

SCION Presents ED EMBERLEY AND FRIENDS

Emberley’s wonderfully simple books—Ed Emberley’s Big Green Drawing Book; Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Animals; Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Weirdos and dozens more—taught a generation of children to draw using the simplest of ingredients. Squiggles, triangles, dots, circles and the other building blocks of drawing came together in clear, step-by-step recipes.

Of course, some of the kids who surrounded themselves with Emberley’s books grew up to be professional artists. Opening July 17 at Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery, “Ed Emberley & Friends” will demonstrate the breadth of influence that Emberley’s encouraging books have had on a generation of artists.

Curated by Caleb Neelon, the exhibition features Ed Emberley as well as five artists who were inspired by him. The artists include Raul Gonzalez, Seonna Hong, Matt Leines, Christopher Kline and Saelee Oh.

Introducing AÏE Magazine

Introducing AÏE Magazine

AÏE Magazine Issue 0

AÏE Magazine Issue 0

With the recession nearly depleting the publishing world of all it’s hidden and not so hidden treasures, it’s about time we got some good news on the magazine front. I was getting a bit nervous every time I opened my mailbox in search of my magazine gems each month. Waking up to news that yet another one of my favorite glossies didn’t have the funds to produce left me feeling very tired and a little sick. There’s only so much one can take.

Quarterly Parisian based fashion and science magazine AÏE, the brainchild of stylist Alexandra Birchall-White and with art direction by Elle Azhdari is exactly what the magazine world needs right now. Independently produced and expertly placed together, AÏE filled with photography, interviews, and collaborations from legends from both the fashion and science worlds. An odd combination of topics one would say, but with the magazines founding members interests stemming from design to biological sciences and beyond, AÏE has the perfect blend of quirk and eccentricity to be the breath of fresh air the magazine industry needs. Dedicated to exposing the talents of a new generation of artists, as well as showing support for more established designers and creative risk takers, this magazine aims highlights those who lie under the radar of the art world.

Printed on baby blue paper and being distributed world wide in art galleries and design studios such as MoMA San Francisco, Collette in Paris, and APC Soho in New York, with AÏE I believe we’re in store for the second coming of the magazine messiah. It can only get better from here!

Art Radar 07.08.10 - Jesse LeDoux at Schmancy Toy Gallery

Jesse LeDoux at Schmancy THIS FRIDAY!! So stop by and check out his fabulous show “Perfect Forecast”,  but for now here is an interview with Jesse!

Schmancy: How much do you get to travel for work?
Jesse: For a while I was traveling quite a lot. So much, in fact, that I got elite frequent flier status. However, I’ve stuck pretty close to home lately, which has been a nice change. Typically, the grass is always greener, though with traveling, I’ve found myself content with wherever I currently am. If I’m at home, I’m happy being home. And if I’m away, I’m pretty excited to be away.

Schmancy: So true! So where is your favorite place?
Jesse: As for favorite places, I really miss Japan a lot. I think about its various charms frequently. I’d really love to be someplace warm right now. Anyplace warm right now. Even the NW, if it would ever heat up. TURN IT UP, Mother Nature! I’ve got some swimming to do!

Schmancy: Swimming is a bit chilly in Seattle, but yes let’s hope this change in weather will stay in the 70’s! Hmm…so where is your secret hideout in the city?
Jesse: Oh c’mon! It wouldn’t be much of a secret if I told you, would it? To be honest, I prefer exploring new places instead of frequenting favorite places. I want to know other people’s secret hideouts.

Schmancy: Ah darn it I tried to trick ya! Oh well…What’s your favorite kind of sweet/candy?
Jesse: I-C-E C-R-E-A-M. Fruity flavors in the summer, chocolately/carmelly ones in the winter. Unless boozy flavors are an option. Those trump all. I had a bourbon chocolate ice cream cone last year that had me wishing I had skipped dinner.

Schmancy: yum. I just had sour cream icecream, it was interesting and making me want some of your bourbon chocolate…Onto more important things like, when you were young what did you want to “do” with your life?
Jesse: I recently found a “Time Capsule” questionnaire that I did when I was 10 years old. It said I wanted to be a cartoonist. I suppose I’m not too far off.

Schmancy: WOW! that’s pretty rad – I actually wanted to be a cartoonist for Disney (this was before all the CGI though…) Do you have any secret talents (the amazing artwork isn’t secret!)
Jesse: More secrets, eh? I have an uncanny ability of putting my foot in my mouth. Put me in any social situation. Within a half hour, I’ll have insulted someone, embarrassed myself, or inadvertently made an ill fated joke that falls flat and could be construed as dirty. And frequently, I can do it in the first 10 seconds. If social awkwardness were a career, my assistant’s assistant would be doing this interview as I golf from my helicopter hovering above my penthouse.

Art Radar 07.08.10 - Emily Huffman at Liquid Spaces Gallery

Originally from north Florida, Emily Huffman studied painting, metal sculpture, spanish language and african dance at Tulane University in New Orleans. After completing a BFA in May 2005, she relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina. Emily worked out of Bonded Llama Artist Studios and exhibited in several spaces in the Raleigh-Durham area. During this time she also delved into her other passion, the healing arts, by training in massage and bodywork, energywork, and yoga. In winter 2007, she co-created ARThresholds, a performance and visual art collaborative. Currently Emily lives in San Francisco where she is pursuing her practices as an artist and holistic bodyworker.

The greatest part of writing Art Radar is discovering so many talented artists and following their work.  I really admire how she works with broad processes, concepts, and media. If you are in the SF area, check out Huffman’s new works.

Kurt Cobain symbolized the ideals, aspirations and disappointments of the ’90s generation, and a diverse array of artists have incorporated his image into their work to comment on those issues.

International in scope, the works on view in Kurt range from straight forward portraiture to pieces that show a more subtle assimilation of Cobain’s ethos and idealism in a broad range of media. With works from the early 1990s to the present, by artists such as Rodney Graham, Douglas Gordon and Elizabeth Peyton, among others, this exhibition will cause viewers to question why and how Kurt’s visage and his gestures came to mean so much to a generation.

Art Radar 07.08.10 - Temple of Doom at Cinders Gallery

The Temple of Blooom is an installation that combines paintings, drawings, collages, murals and sculpture to create our own type of a sonic-visual sanctuary as envisioned by each artist. Exploring places of worship, rituals, shrines, sacred objects and congregation, this place of spiritual assembly is based not on any religious faith but on the faith of our loose-knit community of artists, performers, experimenters, and musicians.

Each artist brings a different energy to the show from Hisham Bharoocha’s meditative mandala style mural painting to Hilary Pecis’ cavernous and intricate collages; paintings of people made entirely of wondrous flowers by Kelie Bowman and a golden paper mache shrine to the gods of plants by STO. Abstracted portraits recall ethereal masks in John Orth’s works on paper while Mark Warren Jacques explores cosmic patterns and forms in his paintings. Sherri Hay’s small, intimate sculptures of plant people lure you in to their majestic world and Jessie Rose Vala’s haunting black and white pencil drawings explore transformations between humans, animals, and the powers of nature.

WHO: The current works of:  Hisham Akira Bharoocha, Kelie Bowman, Sherri Hay, Mark Warren Jacques, John Orth, Hilary Pecis, STO, Jessie Rose Vala

Fashion Meets Music: Kelis “Acapella”

Fashion Meets Music: Kelis “Acapella”

Kelis still has it! Not that we ever thought otherwise

Kelis still has it! Not that we ever thought otherwise

Kelis is one of the most underrated performers out there. By and large her work before and since “Milkshake” has slipped under the radar, which is the main reason why it has taken me almost three months to see the video for “Acapella” the first single from her latest album Flesh Tone which will be released on Tuesday.

Vivid colors and sick styling make Acapella a hypnotic feast for the eyes

Vivid colors and sick styling make Acapella a hypnotic feast for the eyes

Acapella is the perfect mix of a high fashion editorial and a native hunting excursion with Kelis as the model, art director, and hunting guide. Her barely there outfits, showing off her post baby body, reminds us that long before Gaga was playing with her Haus, Kelis was that beast.

On top of the vividly colored outfits and the visually stunning sequences, Kelis rocks some seriously next level make up. From the white face paint and Coming to America meets Pocahontas head dress to the Bond Girl body paint with the Statue of Liberty crown, Kelis keeps us entranced for the full four minutes of Acapella. Let’s not forget that she’s rocking a silver mullet of sorts on top of her head that at times looks both awesomely bad and crazy good-don’t act like you didn’t know Kelis has as many fashion hits as misses.
All fashion and visuals aside, the best part of the video is at the end when we get a glimpse of her adorable son Knight strapped to her back. Not only is he ridding piggy back in his mom’s hottest video, but he’s doing in style. You know this kid is going to be amazing with parents like Nas and Kelis and his first video cameo before he can walk.

Jonathan Yeo "Porn in the USA"

If you’re into the raunchy and controversial, boy have I got news for you. Lazarides is bringing dirty to the doorsteps of Los Angeles residents. Jonathan Yeo is showing his newest exhibition, Porn in the USA, at the LA gallery. The idea for the title and theme of the work being displayed is quite interesting. Jonathan was initially known for his oil paintings. That is until he was summoned by the United States Government to paint a portrait of then President George W. Bush. Well, the White House backed out at the last minute and Jonathan proceeded with the painting anyway. The idea sounds innocent until you look real closely at the painting. The likeness of G Dub-ya’s face is made up of a collage of pornographic images, and I mean hardcore porn. The image was revealed in 2007 and the idea of Yeo’s porn portraits has become a phenomenon known worldwide. This has to be one of the greatest things I’ve heard about to date. It’s vulgar, unexpected, and super funny. I WISH I could go see the portraits for myself but since I can’t I’ll let you ladies have all the fun.

This has to be more epic than the new Twilight film! Epic Games is aware of the buzz around the release of the game, so to feed the hunger of the awaiting fans the company decided to team up with graffiti artist OG Slick to give players a piece of the game they can carry with them forever. OG Slick is the man behind the Los Angeles clothing brand DISSIZIT! and hes meshed the fashion world and the gamer world by creating a tee designed exclusively for the gameplay debut of GOW3 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Sex and the City 2 and My Dating Life

Sex and the City 2 and My Dating Life

Sex and the City 2 and My Dating Life

I recently saw the Sex and the City 2 movie, and while I won’t be passing judgment on the film or spoiling anything here, I will say, it got me thinking. With the characters a couple years older, their lives a bit different, and relationships in new places, I started thinking about my own relationships (or the space for them).

The 4 characters of SATC were last seen as: single, just married, married with child, and married with child + new child. So, the gals have grown up. This is funny for me to notice and say since at this point, the characters are in their 40s and 50s. But to me, at some point I got it in my head that I would “grow up” and settle down in my 30s, and that was later than a lot of peers were thinking/have done. I think it is fantastic the characters are at these stages in life at their ages, but since I see so much of myself in the characters of the series, my preconceived notions expect them to be younger. However, here they are, on the big screen, living fabulously, putting together life, career, love, and family, and they have over 10 years on me.

So what’s the deal? Is 40 the new 30? 30 the new 20? Was my grown up plan severely mistaken? Are these ladies reflecting reality or making a statement on expectations and women’s age? I understand this is a movie and not real life, but something is at the heart of this and I’m curious what it is.

For me, I’m at a point where I’m trying to get my love life and life partner area dialed. I don’t expect to be swept off my feet and married next year, but I figure I ought to get out there now so I don’t wake up one day and realize I’m a long ways from any love I hope for. So sometimes, I push myself to date. I understand you can’t force these things and what will happen will happen and it’s all about timing. Still, if I didn’t make a solid effort to online date and make appearances at social events, I would likely be on a path not including a romantic partner. Which may be okay; knowing my habits I would be relatively isolated, super productive, relaxed, and may end up with my bodega guy. I’m not pressed about having a relationship right this minute, but I know it’s not my heart’s desire to never be in one. The idea of romance and love is steady blinking on my radar because someday I would like to have a life outside work and share that with somebody, and I know those things don’t blossom overnight. So, I’m on myself to put in the efforts now before I turn into a Cathy cartoon.

I mention this because here I am, inwardly stressing about my romantic future, and sometimes going on dates with people I’m not that into because I know I want something down the line. But on screen, here are these ladies who pull together their love stories, but only past their 20s, and even past their 30s. So I wonder: do I have 15 years to get this love game locked? Is the movie false assurance for grown women? Or is it it commentary on what children now will be shaping their grown plans on and what’s next?

Let me know what you think.

The name Ron Howard is basically common knowledge. Everyone has heard of him and respects his talent as a director. Now, it looks like his baby girl has a talent in film as well. You may recognize her fair skin and red hair from films such as The Village and Lady in the Water. Now, Bryce Dallas Howard is the leading lady in photographer Alex Prager’s latest project, Despair. The film is a short thriller inspired by Charles Laughton’s Night of the Hunter (1955) and the 1948 ballet The Red Shoes. In this short film, Prager’s first, she attempts to capture one emotion, despair. I can’t lie, the colors in the film are amazing and the execution of the theme is on point. It takes place in the 1960s so you know the fashion, makeup, and hair are gorgeous. I’m normally not a fan of silent videos, but this one is to die for!

Matthew Barney

When placed under pressure, some of us perform better than normal. Matthew Barney set out to test this theory with his Drawing Restraint series. The underlying catalyst for the creation of the series is the idea that ‘form can only take shape when it struggles against resistance.’ The collection depicts Matthew and others attempting to create graphic art by hand while being hindered, literally. The artists feature are dangling from suspended, clinging to walls, and gripping ropes for dear life while attempting to create. Awesome idea. There are also sculptures, videos, and drawings that emerged from the uncomfortable restraints these artists were placed in. The exhibition, Prayer Sheet with the Wound and the Nail, is currently available for viewing. Go see for yourself!

Curtis Kulig

The dreaded ‘I [heart] New York’ tees and bombarded out society. Lucky for us, Curtis Kulig put a creative spin on the cliché slogan. Instead of the overused 4 work phrase, Kulig shortens it to simply ‘Love Me.’ Short and sweet. If you’re a NYer (or a frequent visior) you may see his tag splattered on a light pole, subway sign, blank wall, or park bench. If you aren’t able to make it to the Big Apple you can purchase these prints online from Poster Child Prints. Rest assured purchasers, each print is legit as well as signed and numbered by the artist. I’m on my way to the e-checkout right now!

Matt Logue Empty LA

It’s quite difficult to picture any major US city completely deserted, but somehow photographer Matt Logue was able to capture such an unimaginable sight on film. Empty LA is a series of images featuring the City of Angels void of any type of human life. Creepy huh? No matter of eerie it may seem to image the city without a human presence, the photographs are beautiful. Actually, I like the city better without all the traffic. The images are available for purchase in book form on the Empty LA website.
