MISS favorite Amanda Lopez will be showing photos from her archives in a show called Mi Vida Loca at the Alley Cat Books Gallery in San Francisco. Family, culture, love and passion are the unifying themes in this show of photography by Amanda Lopez. Many of Lopez’s images were shot in San Francisco’s Mission District, including portraits of past and present neighbors, musicians and lowriders from her Suavecito series. Also included in the show will be images from Cali Love, a series of portraits created in ongoing collaboration with artist – another MISS favorite – Jenni Tay.
Amanda Lopez was born and raised in Sacramento, California under the watchful eye of her parents and paintings of La Virgen de Guadalupe. Her father lent her a camera at the age of 17, and photography soon became her savior. She studied art at San Francisco State University, and continued to shoot around the Bay Area and beyond. Whether she’s photographing Latina homegirls, street musicians or members of her family, Lopez’s camera eye looks for a balance of beauty, strength and urban tenacity. Her work has been published in Vibe, XXL, The Reed Pages, XLR8R, Essence, Hamburger Eyes and the books “Street World,” by Roger Gastman, Upper Playground’s “Backyard Shake Down” and “Girls Got Kicks,” the first photo documentary about women sneaker collector. Lopez continues to be influenced by her Latina background and the energy of American cities. She believes La Virgen de Guadalupe has guided her well.
