Let’s face it. The first thing you do before wiping the crust out of your eyes and brushing your teeth in the morning is logging into every social media network you belong to and stalking everyone you know’s pictures. Then, after you’re done, you upload your own photos in hopes that people “like” your exploits from the previous night. Knowing this, Canon is set to introduce a new digital camera that allows you to eliminate the middle man (your computer) entirely: the Powershot N. It’s got a series of built in features designed to give users an easy way to share their photos across a variety of devices and social networks.
The Powershot features a radical design to match it’s equally innovative focus as a social media connected camera. It’s tiny, only 1.1 inches thick, and features a square design that spits in the face of silly things like ergonomics. What’s notable, though, is that the key controls of the camera are located on either side of the camera, which allows it to operate the same was whether it’s sideways or right side up, and the fairly large tilting touch screen in the back. On top of that it’s got all the other features you’d expect on a Canon camera: a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor with a DIGIC 5 processor and an ISO range of 80-6400, the ability to snap 1080p video at 24 frames per second or 720p at 32 fps, and a bright LED that serves as a serviceable flash.
In addition to its unique design, the Powershot N packs a handful of tricks perfect for the Instagram crowd (which is, like, everyone on Earth at this point). The new Creative Shot mode duplicates captured images and applies “Intelligent Scene Analysis,” cropping the frame and adjusting color and brightness without overwriting the original file. Think of it as a highly advanced Instagram filter. Then there’s on board Wi-Fi, which allows you to easily share your freshly snapped images with everyone over your social network of choice.
The Powershot N will be available this April in either black or white for $300.
