One of our favorite graffiti artists turned fine artist KAWS joins a pantheon of living artists whose work is immortalized as a float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The process of creating the balloon has taken years with multiple revisions – just color matching KAWS’ particular palette was a challenge.
KAWS chose his Companion character for the balloon and he’s covering his face with his hands. Macy’s lead designer John Piper stated “”It’s the first time we’ve had a character that’s shy.” Explaining the pose KAWS (née Brian Donnelly) stated “I was thinking, God, if I had to sit there all day and have a million people pass me and stare, I’d be mortified…That would be the worst experience ever. That’s where the pose came from.”
If you’ll be in NY for Thanksgiving I would definitely check out the parade this year just to see KAWS largest work of art to date. So excited about this – wish I was going this year.
