Ask MISSter Simms - My Boyfriend Is Bi?!

Bi boys

What do you do when you realize your boyfriend may have been playing for the other team all along?

Dear MISSter Simms,

I was at my boyfriend’s apartment the other night using his computer to finish up work when I came across some pictures of him in nothing but his birthday suit and a smile.  At first I thought he had taken them with the intention of one day mailing them to me, but looking at them further made me realize they weren’t taken for me at all.  They looked more like photos you’d see splashed across a gay porn site.  Absolutely bewildered, I decided to do a Google search and, sure enough, found that my boyfriend had a profile on a dating site for gay men.  In his profile he stated that he was bi!  What do I do now?

Shocked and Awed

Dear SAA,

Obviously there’s only one solution to this problem: confronting him and demanding a menage-a-tois, stat!  At least you would do that if this were fantasy land.  In reality, you still have to confront him about his hidden desires.  Let him know that, while you didn’t mean to pry (you didn’t mean to pry, right?), you came across his secret and are totally cool with him being bisexual.  You’re just not cool with him being bisexual and trying to pick up random dudes on the internet on the down low.  Let him know that that type of behavior can lead to a whole host of unwanted problems.  Personally I’d break up with him as the fact that he’s got a profile on a gay website means he’s out there trying to explore something different than what you guys have/had, but whether you ultimately decide to do that is up to you.  At the very least you need to have a conversation with him about this issue and get things out in the open.  Once you do, you’ll know what to do.

Blogger Project: Keds

keds spring 2013

I grew up wearing plain ol’ white Keds every summer so when I see how the line has expanded it’s always a pleasant surprise. For Spring 2013 Keds is taking the classic style and sprucing it up with different colors, fabrics, eyelets and soles. Some styles have jute soles, some have 3 eyelets while some have 4, some have thicker soles, while others have the traditional sole. Whatever your taste or mood you will find something you like whether it’s florals, polka dots, pointy toes, neons, high tops, crazy patterns, gingham or stripes. Here are some of my favorites…

quay eyeware

Quay Eyeware is a line of sunglasses from Australia that offers fun styles at an affordable price. Retailing for about $40, you can get yourself a designer pair of glasses without spending designer money. All of the styles shown are in stores now and Gwen Stefani has been seen rockin’ some of these styles - and we know she has great taste. You can find Quay at Urban Outfitters, Karmaloop, Modcloth and Nordstrom.

New to the line is None The Wiser, a line of sustainably made bamboo glasses that are handmade. These glasses (last picture below) retail for a bit more at around $160 but you know that you didn’t harm any people or the environment by buying them. Not a big price to pay for stylish social responsibility right? Learn more at NoneTheWiserEyewear.com.

Blogger Project: Insubordinate Lads

insubordinate lads weekender
Insubordinate Lads is the labor of love of a husband and wife team; the husband hails from London, while the wife hails from New York. Like their union, Insubordinate Lads marries London military styling with American craftsmanship.

insubordinate lads tote

You’re probably wondering why I’m even writing about a men’s company and I’ll tell you. I love man bags - especially those that are military-inspired. I find those kinds of bags to be the most functional and I happen to think that they involve simple, clean, design where all the details are thought out and these bags are meant to last. I photographed my two favorite bags the Weekender ($370) and the Tote ($265) - I think they would work equally well for a man or a woman and I especially like the camo fabric. Maybe camo cargos are not your style but you can still rock your camo with a bag. You can find the bags online come spring at InsubordinateLads.com.

Blogger Project: Scotch Naturals Nail Polish

scotch naturals nail polish

Scotch Naturals is the cleanest nail polish on the market. Sure, many brands tout the ubiquitous “3-free” phrase but Scotch Naturals is completely free of solvents. While 3-free polishes score about 4-6 on a scale of 10 for toxicity, Scotch Naturals scores 0 (10 signifies the highest amount of toxins). How did Scotch naturals manage to do it? All the solvents have been replaced by water. So how does that affect wear? You need to use the specially formulated base and top coats and the manicure will last just as long as any 3-free polish.

Founder Ginny Cardenas was on a mission when she started Scotch Naturals. She actually started a children’s polish brand first called Hopscotch Kids and when moms started demanding solvent-free polish she spun off with the adult line Scotch Naturals. The first part of her mission was to create polish that wasn’t toxic. The second part was to dispel the myth that “good for you” didn’t have to look hippy dippy. Her branding, packaging design and logos are all very sophisticated and can stand next to any luxury designer polish line. One of my favorite things about the line is that all of the names of the polishes come from the names of cocktails that list Scotch as an ingredient - so clever!

This is definitely one of my new favorite brands to look out for. I understand the old saying that “beauty is pain” but it shouldn’t be toxic! Learn more on ScotchNaturals.com.
