LAVANILA: The Healthy Deodorant

I’m a busy mom that loves nothing more than to rush home to pick up my daughter from preschool so I can spend as much time with her and my husband. I’m also a mom that loves working out – no seriously, I’m addicted to my gym but then again it may be due to exorbitant membership fees each month that motivates me to work out 4-5 times a week. I fit these mini workouts during my lunch break. Since these workouts are short – they are super intense and I break out into a decent sweat about 7-10 minutes into  a routine. I have to rely on a hard working sweat protection product to keep me from sweating buckets and smelling like a boxer during the 12th round of a prize fight.

Key words on a product I’m most likely to choose: “Clinical Strength”, “Anti-Perspirant” and “Active Ingredient – Aluminum Chlorohydrate”. Aluminum is what keeps you from perspiring by plugging up sweat ducts temporarily stopping the flow of moisture to the skin. Another key ingredient in heavy duty deodorants: parabens. Parabens are preservatives that keep cosmetic products free of bacteria. More and more anti-perspirants are doing away with parabens if you are weary. Do look for words that end in –paraben, as this is a hint of parabens present in your products.

Aluminum and parabens still have bad reps circulating around the web. Aluminum has been reported as increasing the risk of breast cancer and/or Alzheimer’s Disease are absorbed through pores or enter the skin through a cut, like from shaving. Traces of parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors, suggesting that they have weak estrogen-like effects if absorbed through the skin.  (WebMD –  small study conducted in 2004 – This study did not prove that parabens caused breast cancer or if it was from an anti-perspirant.)

I depend on an anti-perspirant to keep me dry even through my sweatiest spin class workouts. I normally choose the anti-perspirant deodorant combo to keep me dry and odor free. You can also choose just a deodorant if you don’t sweat profusely or if you don’t need the extra protection for the gym. Here’s a brief explanation on the difference between the two products: anti-perspirants controlls wetness and odor by slowing the flow of perspiration to the skin, whereas deodorants just masks odor and and reduces odor causing bacteria in perspiration.

Which brings me to a product that I recently have tried out: The good folks at LAVANILA, home of the 100% healthy collection, sent a sample of The Healthy Deodorant to me to test out. I did put this to the test – three days at the gym in three different types of workout classes. I want to talk about what I loved first.

I really liked the size of the deodorant. I feel like it covers a lot of surface area in a few short strokes.

The scent I received is Pure Vanilla – notes are as follows: Madagascar vanilla, heliotrope and tonka bean. What I smell is powdery clean with just a hint of sweet vanilla. It is a lovely scent and milder than some of the scented anti-perspirants I have used in the past. Also, it’s very comfortable to wear – I applied it immediately after shaving my armpits in the shower and I didn’t experience any irritation. One thing I did not like is that it didn’t keep me dry but I forgot that I was using a natural deodorant and not an anti-perspirant. However, this kept me odor free regardless how much I sweat while working out. I will use this on weekends or the days I know I’ll be taking a break from the gym. The other factor is price: $18USD/1.7 oz vs. $8.99 USD/1.6 oz (leading competitor). For the price conscious, there is now a smaller travel size that’s offered for $10/USD/.90oz. Regardless, of what I disliked (which is very little) I was pleasantly surprised by this product.

This is the first time I have tried a LAVANILA product and I must say this was a lovely introduction. I am considering trying one of their rollerball fragrances for any upcoming trips or for an easy scent to wear post gym showers. If you are in the market for a deodorant that’s aluminum, paraben, propylene glycol and harsh chemical free, this this product is for you. Also, you have 7 scents to choose from and all variations of vanilla, a bonus if you are bored of “powder fresh or shower clean” scented deodorants.

You can find LAVANILA products at your local Sephora, www.dermstore.com or at www.lavanila.com.
