The words “Gangsta” and “Nancy Sinatra” rarely crossed paths until a little known Elizabeth Grant appeared on the scene last summer with her eery video and song for Video Games.
Fast forward about six months and she’s hot on every one’s lips, crowned to be music and fashion’s latest muse. Her style is very reminiscent of 60s glam models, but feel refreshed, and dare we say it again, gangsta.
The sixties have been a major influence on the Spring/Summer trends, as well as showing up on the Haute Couture runways of Dior and Gautier. Del Rey embodies this trend both with her voice and fashion sense.
Her highly anticipated Born to Die is set to release today, and reviews seem to be mixed. Some say that she’s pop music’s glaring beacon of hope for the overly saturated autotuned airwaves, others say she’s but a manufacturing of the industry’s thought on what’s hot next. Regardless of what others say, we believe you should check it out and come to your own conclusion.
We know this, whether you are a fan of her music or not, you will undoubtedly notice her style. Her sixties hair and makeup paired with large hoops and custom jewelry (did you see her BAD ring?) are a nice juxtaposition which clarify exactly why she refers to herself as a “gangsta Nancy Sinatra.” Come this summer, I bet we’ll see lots of jean cut-off shorts, crop tops, lolita sunglasses and flowers in hair. Just make sure you’re hair is perfectly coiffed – no frizz, smooth long waves, focus your makeup on the eyes (it’s all about that eyeliner!) and keep the lips nude. Put it all together and you’ll be Born to Live.
Lana Del Rey’s album Born to Die will be available January 31st.
