At no other show does your seat vibrate from its soundtrack. At no other show does the crowd spring to their feet in wild applause once it ends. And at no other show does its designer close not with a bow, but a cartwheel. It’s because no other show is a Betsey Johnson show. She injects each of her shows with her fervent energy.
This one was no exception. With the theme of T & A, it was truly a celebration of the woman’s body, something rare in ‘fashion’ where most designers prefer the slimmest form so as not to obscure their design. To Betsey’s credit, she opened her show with her daughter Lulu which set the tone for the show’s theme, for no traditional ‘models’ body will ever be representative of a true woman’s – soft and voluptuous, not so much cutting through the air as it slinks down the runway to its own sensuous pace.
The designs were a wild amalgamation of pretty frocks and punk sentiments. Some favorites included a sheer organza trench, easy leopard pants, a pastel printed body-con dress, an acid neon crochet tunic and sparkly studded evening pieces that would be perfect to ring in 2012 with. With S/S 2012 Betsey proved when wearing her designs that you can be both girl and woman, powerful in your curves yet light-hearted and fun.
