So, what’s really in a birthday? To me, they are very special days. I LOVE birthdays. I always have (and not just celebrating my own). The cake. The gathering of friends and family. The cards. The presents. The laughter. The memories. Sure, there are holidays and anniversaries and other ways of measuring precious moments, but celebrating a birthday is the one day that the focus is on you and you can, to quote Walt Whitman, “sing of yourself and celebrate yourself.” I think it’s important to honor and recognize who you are and what makes you special and unique from everyone else. That’s what’s in a birthday for me.
August 8 is a pretty eventful day, in more ways than one. I’m in good company in terms of birth-mates. I share it with one of my good friends, Tiffani, as well as Dustin Hoffman, Roger Federer, Donny Most, Keith Carradine and, of course, The Edge from U2. On the actual day of my birth, Nixon resigned from office, so I was literally born to be politically active and a Democrat at that. My birthday has also supplied me with a favorite number (eight) and if you turn that number on it’s side, it’s the symbol for infinity. So, I’ll go on forever, or at least be a big fan of Buzz Lightyear.
When I was a kid, my mom would let me pick out a sugary cake topper and frosting at the store for my birthday, as well as bake my favorite cake. I can still remember being so excited to go to the store and pick all of that out. If birthdays weren’t celebrated at the house, they would be at McDonalds or Carl’s Jr (they used to let you tour the facilities and I can remember being taught how to make fries at Carl’s Jr one year…those days are long gone), the local pool, or the park; then they graduated to sleepovers, trips to the beach or mountains and Disneyland; now that I’m older, they can include traveling to destinations, a day at the spa and of course, lots of good food and a drink or two. I’ve only been surprised by a party twice in my life: once when I turned 13 and my friends “kidnapped me” and took me to the mall; and once when I was an adult and thought I was going out to a romantic dinner, and it turned out to be a great night with my then boyfriend and our closest friends. Regardless of the location, the constant has always been having people I care about helping me welcome another year. What’s not to love about that?!
Sending you birthday wishes whenever your special day is, dear reader. Thank you for indulging me on mine!
Until next week (and my next obsession)!
