Secondhand Rose: VCNY

Vintage Culture New York, or VCNY, is the brainchild of Zach Darton and Zoila Sylvester. This New York-based duo has set out to create a webstore that showcases a well-curated assortment of vintage apparel and accessories for the stylishly inclined. In a world where vintage webstores pop up with as much fervor as the young ladies who vie to be featured as models therein, what sets VCNY apart?

For one thing, there is selection. Darton and Sylvester have stated their influences as Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, YSL, L.L. Bean, Orvis, Filson, Fishing, the outdoors, classic pieces, simplicity, old world glamour, sailing, Park Avenue and New York City.  Some of my favorite pieces from the shop are pure embodiments of these influences: a simple crocheted RALPH top, a men’s dive watch that’s just as suitable for ladies, and an acrylic and fabric purse that only a Park Ave. denizen would carry. This clear focus on classic pieces coupled with a tight assortment – so as not to overwhelm the shopper – will certainly do them well.

There is also the VCNY philosophy of why one should buy vintage. Sylvester goes on to preach everything from vintage’s ‘green’ advantage to the old adage of quality over quantity. These are advantages that I only became attracted to over time, but that are now one of the driving forces that have kept me buying vintage. This, combined with pricepoints barely venturing over $100, will make your wallet just as happy as you are.

There is stiff competition out there and one question remains. Will they be able to hold their own against shops like Nasty Gal and Spanish Moss Vintage (both with origins in vintage re-sale but are now legitimate retailers and brands in and of themselves)? It’s hard to tell, as their shop is so new. The success of webstores like Nasty Gal and Spanish Moss is due to their concise and targeted branding.  As VCNY is still in its beginning stages, it’s evident it is still trying to settle into its identity.

Judge for yourself: If you like what you see, buy something. In the retail market, true admiration comes when you lay your money down.
