Fashion Meets Music: Janet Jackson

The Janet era...Janet the album that is

As the youngest child of pop music’s royal family, there is literally nothing I can say about Miss Janet Damita Jo Jackson, if you’re nasty, that you have not heard before. From The Jacksons and Good Times, to For Colored Girls, and from Janet Jackson to Discipline, Janet quite literally grew up in front of our eyes with every secret marriage, weight fluctuation, and wardrobe malfunction documented by the media.

Having reinvented herself as often as her fellow FMM icon Madonna and influenced every pop princess from Aaliyah to Rihanna, it is safe to say that Janet has made every girl growing up in the 80s and 90s stop and rethink her style and career path.

Janet practically invented the format that every female pop singer has adhered too since I was in Osh Kosh, moving from girl next door to sex kitten while performing killer dance moves in belly baring outfits to beat heavy tracks. Don’t believe me? Then you obviously have not seen any of Janet’s videos, or any video by Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Britney, Christina, Ciara, Mya, Keri Hilson, Rihanna, TLC…I can keep going, because to quote Joan Morgan in last August’s Essence magazine all of these ladies “live in the house that Janet built.”

Rhythm Nation Janet

As a lifelong fan of Janet since before I was a pro at walking, not only have I followed her style from her days rocking the big hair and one hoop earring with a key dangling on it through her Poetic Justice braids, to her early 2000’s eclectic phase, right back to me rocking one hoop earring with a key during my junior year of college and my best friend going full “I Get So Lonely” for a night out. I can also say that I fully plan on doing my version of the Pleasure Principle Janet this year for Halloween, you can never start too early on your costume.

She may be the youngest, but don't call her baby.

If all you know about the baby sister of the King of Pop is her Super Bowl 2004 wardrobe malfunction and a supporting role in The Nutty Professor II, you clearly must have been living under a rock for the past 20 years or a baby. Either way, peep these early Janet videos and get schooled in what it really means to be in control, and answer the age old question “What have you done for me lately?”
