The on-going information regarding skin cancer and the dangers of UVA and UVB ray exposure is everywhere we look. As frightening as this information is, we still love our “just back from the Caribbean vacation” tans! The solution is SELF tanner. Sunless tanning gels, lotions, and sprays have gotten a bad rap for the overly orange, streaky formulas we’ve all encountered from seasons past; but new formulas are on the market now that are definitely a solution for the sun and skin cancer wary.
Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel: This lightweight, non-oily gel develops over a few hours. It promises instant absorption without staining clothes. It’s ideal for those who like a year-round tan. From a company as tried and true as Clarins (best known for their superb range of skincare products), this gel provides the perfect “pretty glow” that builds gradually. ($33 for 4.4oz)
Josie Maran Bronzing Argan Oil: This product is perfect for those with sensitive skin or for my ladies who are partial to “natural” products. It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, petro-chemicals, and phthalates. It is formulated with 100% Organic Argan Oil, the formula imparts a bronze shimmer and light, citrus-y essential oil scent and can be applied to the body, face, and hair. This is best used mixed in with your regular moisturizer and can also be mixed with foundation. Safe for oily skin and also helps to improve dry skin. ($52 for 1.7oz)
Perricone, M.D. No Sun Tanner: I’m deeming this one the SUPER product for tanning! For those that have read my previous beauty tips, you will notice I am a huge fan of Perricone’s products. There is no exception here. This No Sun Tanner is another multi-use (safe for body and face) product that firms skin and nourishes while promoting a healthy, natural looking tan. It contains DMAE a skin- tightening ingredient along with Tocotrienols that lend superior antioxidant protection and other ingredients that boost skin’s natural tanning ability PLUS Pro-vitamin D providing all the benefits of sun without the harmful effects. 100% worth the price! ($65 for 4oz)
LORAC SelfTantalizer: This is a kit that comes with a gradual self-tanner and a mitt. One of the best scented self tanners I’ve ever encountered; it has a warm vanilla scent. It’s also safe for sensitive skin, formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, phthalates, GMOs, and triclosan. It attests to an immediate bronze, transfer resistant glow of a body makeup and long lasting results. The mitt helps provide even results and prevents a notorious, tell-tale orange hand. It provides a rich color and anti-aging properties such as Camu Camu, maracuja, and pomegranate seed oils to help keep skin smooth, healthy and protected. All reviews I’ve seen on this product are “glowing” -pun intended! The price is also reasonable, it’s definitely worth a try! ($34 for 5oz)
Banana Boat Self-Tanning Lotion: Available in Light/Medium or Deep/Dark, this inexpensive product is best for the fair skinned. Oil and streak-free, this self tanner takes a little longer to dry. Enriched with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera, I like to use this for my legs in the winter months. For a more gradual tan, I like to add some to my regular moisturizer. However, I wouldn’t suggest using this for the face. Although it’s oil free, its consistency is just a LITTLE too heavy for my face, so use with caution! ($6.99 for 6fl oz)
If you’ve sworn off self tanners from previous experiences, or have been too apprehensive to try them, I hope this will help you reconsider so you can enjoy the benefits of looking like you’ve just returned from a fabulous tropical getaway!
