To call Theo Kogan multifaceted would be an understatement. A singer, songwriter, actress, and model/muse, Ms. Kogan once fronted the legendary all female band, the Lunachicks. With the inception of Armour Beauty came an entirely new level of creativity for fans to enjoy. The collection of lip glosses (with rock n roll names ranging from Kashmir to Barracuda), boasts a long wearing, natural formula that’s super moisturizing and cruelty free. Here Ms. Kogan shares the concept behind Armour, makeup tips and tricks, and what it is that makes her feel beautiful.
Hi Theo, how are you today?
I’m great Glossy and so happy to do this interview!
Being a make up artist and product junkie, it has always been a dream of mine to start my own cosmetics line. Can you give us some insight on how you got started with Armour Beauty? What was the inspiration behind it?
I was in the midst of doing a rock opera performance piece in NY (called Screen Test) and I called up a friend of mine in LA and said, “Do you want to start a lip gloss line with me?” So she helped me get the ball rolling and then I took over. I had no idea how to run a makeup company and there have been many bumps along the way. Luckily I am a fast learner.
The inspiration was to create a rock n roll, luxury line of affordable lip gloss that moisturizes and stays on during a performance and smells good. I was so fed up with all the gloss on the beauty market coming off all over my microphone when performing and so I created what was missing! Each gloss has its own character just like the rock stars and icons they are named after and it is chock full of natural ingredients such as shea butter, avocado oil and vitamin e (to name just a few).
What 5 beauty products can you not live without?
Armour Beauty Lip gloss (of course, with rotating color selection. Right now it’s our new color Grace), Palmers Cocoa Butter Stick– it is my favorite as lip balm, L’Oreal Voluminous mascara, Makeup Forever Face and Body Liquid Foundation, and Shu Uemura eyelash curler.
Do you plan on expanding Armour? Powders, eyeshadows, concealers?
I am sticking with lips for now. I have dreams of going to eyes- as Armour Beauty is the “go- to” for lips. We shall see what happens.
I know that you’ve spent many years traveling and being in one of the most awesome bands ever (The Lunachicks). You’ve got to have some fun beauty tips up your sleeves. Will you share them with us?
Aw thank you. My tips, tried and true from years on the road are: Get lots of sleep, drink lots of water, and use sunscreen every single day. It’s common sense stuff really, but so important.
Congratulations on your new baby! How is life now with being a new mommy, and running your own business?
Thank you again! Being a mom is wild. It is all consuming- really hard and really amazing. I literally was working on Armour Beauty as soon as I could after having my baby. My husband almost killed me for doing that because it was probably too soon. It has been ultra challenging running a business and having a new baby. Now that she is over 8 months old it’s getting easier, phew!
What makes you feel beautiful?
Feeling confident and being happy. I think beauty comes from within, as cornball as it sounds, I think its true. Getting my paint on certainly helps too and a good outfit doesn’t hurt either.
