Hello, dear readers! As I’m sure you’ve noticed, My Latest Obsession took a bit of a break the last couple of weeks. The reason for this absence was that I was on vacation in London, England! If you can remember, back in January, I wrote about New Year’s Resolutions and mentioned that my number one thing to do this year was go get to England. Well, three months into 2011, I’ve already crossed a big resolution off my list!
This was my first trip to London and it was magical. I felt so at home there. I went everywhere on The Tube (and didn’t get lost once!), went to the British, Victoria and Albert and Tate Modern museums and went to some incredible historical places, including The Tower of London, Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Millennium Bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kensington Palace (where Princess Diana used to live), Big Ben and Westminster Abbey.
And then there’s the shopping. I spent quite a bit of time on the famous Regent Street and kicked around Carnaby Street for a bit. I spent a couple of hours in Topshop (very easy to do!) and also enjoyed checking out H&M, Zara, Jigsaw, Uniqlo and some local shops. My favorite store by far was visiting the venerable Liberty of London. It’s no secret that I have an incredible obsession for this brand, as it was my very first piece for this column. I felt that buying one of their famous floral scarves would be the perfect souvenir of my first trip to London, but I couldn’t quite make up my mind which one I wanted once I entered into the hallowed walls of the store. Truth be told, it was such a treat just to be in the store. The floors creaked as I walked around, I rode a very small, very old elevator and looked at so many exquisite pieces. It was a heady blend of tradition and fashion.
If fashion in London is any indication of what could be coming stateside in the next couple of months, you have the following to look forward to: men are wearing elasticized pegged (or rolled) jeans that they stuff into ankle boots (remember those from the 80s??), women are wearing LOTS of florals with black tights and flats in every color, and then there’s an interesting blend of 70s flouncy with 80s flashdance. It might sound interesting, but it’s not a very successful look. I have checked out the Topshop website since my visit and quite a few pieces that I shook my head at are no longer available (thank god), so it looks like I was just shopping at an odd time in-between seasons.
At least I hope so!
Until next week (and my next obsession)
