Tax season got you down? I owe $$ this year, so I was definitely feeling the need to get out and escape reality for a bit this week. That came in the form of the movie, Hanna. I can’t rave about this movie enough. I knew the general plot (A girl is raised by her father to be the perfect assassin), but was not expecting it to be so pitch perfect. Incredible acting. Solid story. Amazing music (courtesy of The Chemical Brothers). Visually stunning. Nothing really happens in this movie without there being a good reason for it. The movie starts, you’re completely absorbed in this girl, Hanna, training in the wilds of Finland and why she has to flip a switch, and then you’re off on a roller coaster of a flick that you just can’t look away from.
In many ways, Hanna is quite minimalist in nature (except for the intensity of the plot). Costumes are rather utilitarian and subdued, coming primarily from the street, or within easy reach of a quick pair of hands. Dialogue is kept to a minimum. Yes, it’s in the film, but the bulk of it actually comes from a family that Hanna befriends on her journey. When you’re a trained assassin, there’s just not a lot of reasons to engage in conversation, unless it’s necessary. Actress Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Atonement) can communicate so much through her unflinching crystal blue eyes, that words don’t really seem all that necessary anyways. The film takes place in Finland, Germany and Morocco, all stark places that are completely stripped down. The film has a white, clay orange and blue hue to it, so you never quite warm up to it and are always just a little uncomfortable. Add in the electronic sounds of The Chemical Brothers, who swerve between multi-layered and stripped down melodies as the sonic backdrop to this feature and you have a piece of visual art that will stay with you long after you’ve left the theater.
If you’re looking for a great escape that will completely takeover your senses, then head to the theater and see Hanna now!
Until next week (and my next obsession)!
