Ask MISSter Simms – When Shy People Collide

Sometimes you have to stop being shy and embrace your womanly powers

Dear MISSter Simms,

I’m not exactly shy, but I’m not one to approach people either.  If people approach me first, then I’m 100% receptive to them.  But if they don’t, it’s hard for me to make a connection.  This “problem”  has become an issue lately because there’s a boy in one of my classes this semester that I have a huge crush on.   Sometimes I catch him smiling at me, and then he starts blushing.  Or he’ll stare at me when he thinks I’m not looking.  Sometimes he even likes to pretend that he doesn’t notice me.  Like I said, I’m not one to approach people and that makes it difficult to respond to him the way I’d like to….what should I do?

A Little Awkward

Dear ALA,

You know how when a friend invites you over to their place for dinner, and you’re really really hungry but you’re not sure what’s going to be for dinner.  And bladdow!  Out comes some food you’ve never seen in your life before.  Something like squishy octopus tentacles covered in oyster sauce.  You look at it in disgust, but you’re soooooo hungry and you don’t want your friend to think you’re rude.  So you dig in, and after a few chews you realize that it’s not so bad.

The whole point of that (possibly weird) story is that sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to enjoy the finer things in life.  And in this case stepping out of your comfort zone means approaching the boy and saying something to him.

Could be as simple as “hi”, “what’s up?, or, my personal go to line, “what the dilly, yo!”.   Could be something more advanced like, “I don’t understand this crap.  Can you help me out?”  Doesn’t really matter.  The goal here is to get him to talk to you, And really, there’s no need for you to be shy here.  You’re a woman.  You’ve got all the power when it comes to boys.  We become putty in your hands once your charms are used on us.  So tap into those charms, flirt with your crush, and eventually the fruits of your labor will blossom into a hopefully wonderful romance.
