Women Making History: Fashion Photographer JP Yim

JP Yim

During the hectic New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 presentations we had the chance to have a quick chat with fashion photographer JP Yim. Wielding the camera at the end of the catwalk for the likes of WireImage and Getty Images, she captures moments on the runway that we drool over onto our laptops and keyboards. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Vouge, HBO.com, Oprah Winfrey Show, Sundance Channel, Lifetime Television, MTV, BBC Worldwide, among others. Be sure to view the images she shot in the gallery…

What woman, besides your mom or grandmother, do you find inspirational?

Edna Mode, Grace Coddington, Oprah Winfrey, Christiana Amanpour, Aung San Suu Kyi, Mary Ellen Mark, Margaret Bourke-White, Alexandra Boulet

How did you get your start?

I always loved fashion and would pour through the pages of Vogue and other clothing magazines. I started going to fashion shows on my own because I wanted to do a photo story on the designers, models and clothes, which eventually lead to assignments photographing during fashion week.

What inspires your fashion photography? The designers or the clothing?

Designers and the clothing are both inspirational to me. And particularly the level of execution that a designer can translate clothing into an artistic vision and being able to be a part of & photographing those ethereal & fleeting moments in time.

What are you most looking forward to about photographing fashion week?

Seeing exciting collections, great models, amazing hair & makeup, music and ambiance that when all those pieces merge you know you’re in for a great show to photograph.

What’s your favorite piece photo that you’ve taken?

Behind the scenes with Karl Lagerfeld at the Chanel Resort Collection.

Who do you want to photograph?

Designer Yohji Yamamoto

What part of fashion photography is the most challenging and do you dislike the most?

Traveling from show to show in the city with all the heavy photo gear!!!!!!!

Any advice for ladies who are just starting out in a fashion photography?

Get in shape, its a lot of running around!!!!! And go out and shoot as much as you can and most importantly finding a niche within fashion photography that you really love!
