I kicked off this season of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with attendance at the Heart Truth Red Dress Collection fashion show. Celebrities, Hollywood superstars, and became runway models for day as they exuberantly strut down the catwalk to support The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). NHLBI continues to raise awareness of heart disease as the #1 killer of American women. The Red Dress, introduced by in 2002, is the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness.
Participants and designers included Alison Sweeney in Tadashi Shoji, Ann Curry in Carmen Marc Valvo, Archie Panjabi in J. Mendel, Audrina Patridge in Badgley Mischka, Camila Alves in KaufmanFranco, Cat Deeley in Alberta Ferretti, Dania Ramirez in Catherine Malandrion, Denise Richards in Matthew Williamson, Dita Von Teese in Zac Posen, Eva Amurri in Chris Benz, Eve in David Meister, Garcelle Beauvais in Monique Lhuillier, Gayle King in Donna Karan, Giuliana Rancic in Marchesa, Julianne Hough in Swarovski, Katrina Bowden in Oscar de la Renta, Laila Ali in A Pea In the Pod, Linda Gray in Pamella Roland, Natasha Bedingfield in Nicole Miller, Patti LaBelle in Zang Toi, Suzanne Somers in Ina Soltani, and Taraji P. Henson in Naeem Khan.
Unlike most fashion shows, where the models meant to be like hangers for the collection as it comes down the runway, these celebrity models beamed, showed personality, and had fun as they showed off their magnificent looks. Archie Panjabi, who plays Kalinda on CBS’s The Good Wife hit the runway arms wide with the hugest grin on her face. Allison Sweeney flexed her biceps proudly and nearly skipped down the runway to Olivia Newton-John’s “Let’s Get Physical”. Laila Ali looked radiant in her 7th month of pregnancy, rubbing her belly, and gave us a show with a couple passes on her bootylicious backside! And Patti Labelle, she was just Patti Labelle in her dramatic Zang Toi fiercely floated down the runway, singing along to “I’m Every Woman” and the audience went wild.
Natasha Bedingfield closed the show with a performance that had the audience waving their arms in unison. I’ve been to a few of these celebrity fashion shows before, but this was by far, my favorite. In all this was a great way to kick off the madness that is Fashion Week, effectively marrying a cause, glitz, glamour, fashion and fun.
