M.I.S.S. NYFW: Betsey Johnson Fall 2011

Looks from The Black Label

Betsey Johnson’s Fall 2011 Valentine’s Day runway show titled “He Loves Me/He Loves Me Not” looks like it did not disappoint. The extravaganza was virtually split into two shows: The first, designs from her higher-priced line The Black Label, and the second, from a new lower-priced line (with all items under $100 dollars), under the a line titled Pink Patch. According to Style.com, Betsey has always wanted to make a line for the gals who usually purchase items from her lower-priced, licensed, accessory line, but she “did not want to do it with a big-box store.”

The Black Label offerings were reminiscent of Cruella DeVille from the Disney story 101 Dalmatians: all-over animal prints, black and white with splashes of color, and color-blocked hair (follow the previous link for a detailed account of the beauty looks from the show). Using models, Johnson featured looks like the fantastic Prince-styled ruffled front coat, a stereo-printed graphic sweater, and a red plaid suit that had me clamoring for the matchy-matchy suits worn by Cher in the movie Clueless. Betsey also mixed her animal print items with floral prints, and accessorized the clothes with flower garlands as necklaces.

For the Pink Patch line, Johnson used her employees to showcase her pieces. She featured real people of all ages, sizes, genders, and in all walks of life (i.e., a pregnant employee) to debut her new, affordable line. The looks are typical BJ throwbacks – which makes me outrageously happy – as I will now be able to afford some of her pieces! Must-haves include a black jean jacket with peplum shoulders, a printed silk skull slipdress, garments with original Betsey Johnson cartoon prints, and her signature brightly-colored floral patterns. All of the looks were accessorized with her Betseyville line of bags and shoes (Is it still located in Betseyville if Steve Madden owns it?); these trimmings are sure to be a commercial hit for Betsey, and will likely by carried by Steve Madden stores. This here Cabbage Patch will definitely be harvesting from the Pink Patch as soon as it is available for sale! Oh, and Betsey: since we wrote this fabulous article, can we start coming to your shows again? ☺

I had the chance to go to her Spring ’11 show back in September and it was amazing. What I love about BJ is that so much of her own personality goes into each collection. I wish there were more photos of the models in their chocolate box hats! They said “I F*cking Love You” in honor of Valentine’s Day. SO CUTE!

  3. Summer, I saw those hats in the style.com pictures; they were amazing! Hey, I have a choc box leftover from V-Day….I should make one….
I was at the same show last season as well! Tour de Betsey, right?
