Lately, I’ve been feeling a little bit lost, wondering if my life is going in the right direction. And as I often do, I turned to the internet for some inspiration. That’s when I stumbled across Creative Mornings. Creative Mornings are free monthly breakfast lectures given by all kinds creative people in New York, Zurich, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. And one lecturer in particular left a lasting impression.
Meet Californian-based design writer Alissa Walker of Gelato Baby, who last December, was invited to give a talk for Creative Mornings (click here to watch the video). From her very first project Think Teen Magazine to eating gelato everyday and walking all over L.A. and beyond, the story of how Alissa went from traffic jams to getting paid to do the things she loves is incredibly inspiring. And so is the way she lives everyday – just check out her studio below! Alissa was generous enough to let M.I.S.S. life-snoop her world and her home… Prepare to be inspired!
DESIGN INSIDER: HI ALISSA! TELL US ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE.
ALISSA: I live in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, a hilly, walkable neighborhood that’s full of good friends and great restaurants. My house is a very compact two-story ranch. Basically a royal blue box with white trim.
DESIGN INSIDER: WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE ROOM?
ALISSA: My studio is a bright room on the second story with incredible views of the Los Angeles basin that stretch all the way to Catalina Island. The studio isn’t really “designed” so I’d have to pick my living room for a style I’d describe as “colorful.” My boyfriend and I merged our apartments and we both had a vaguely modern aesthetic in our furniture choices and I wouldn’t say anything particularly matched. But we both love bright, graphic colors, and we love to collect things like vintage toys and thermoses, so everything just happened to fall into place.
DESIGN INSIDER: WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FAVORITE ROOM?
ALISSA: In my studio I sit at the computer and write, all day long (pretty exciting, huh?) then I get to watch these beautiful panoramic sunsets every night. In the living room, I get to entertain, which is my favorite thing to do.
DESIGN INSIDER: WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION?
ALISSA: A 1959 Seeberg Select-o-Matic jukebox that I grew up with in my basement. My parents gave it to us with all the original 45s, and we’ve updated it with new music.
DESIGN INSIDER: WHAT’S YOUR BEST EVER BARGAIN FIND?
ALISSA: I used to go to estate sales every weekend religiously, dragging home what were probably far too many bargains from mansions in the Hollywood Hills. But my best ever find was a black-and-white houndstooth coat with a beautiful red lining that I found out later was designed by dress designer who was famous for dressing Donna Reed. $20!
