The Academy Awards Review

123069_D_0686
OK boys and girls it’s that time again. To dot your “i’s” and cross your “t’s” and prep your acceptance speech because the Oscar Nominations have been announced. I am going to do my best to break down who I believe should, will, and sadly, won’t be going home with a little golden man on his or her arm.

2010 was a very interesting year for film. Although the real world was battling with the unemployment rate, at least one war, and slowly digging American out of a recession, Hollywood was not fazed by this at all. In fact, many movies from 2010 won spots on the list of highest-grossing films of all times.

But, if you’re like me, the Oscars are really only one thing: a dog race. So ladies and gentleman, place your bets please.

Following the trend that began last year, 10 movies are nominated for Best Picture. Then as we get closer to the date, the Academy voters will pretty quickly narrow it down to 5 real contenders. The contenders are following:

127 Hours
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
The King’s Speech
The Social Network
True Grit
Toy Story 3
Winter’s Bone

This year, I feel like the Academy came up with a good list. However, I truly believe Winter’s Bone should win. And it doesn’t have a prayer. It was a low budget, film-festival hit that was breathtaking and extremely raw. But since it’s Hollywood voting, my money is on The Social Network or Black Swan. I would be happy with The Social Network but please stab me in the face with a nail file if Black Swan takes home the Oscar.

One out of 3 times, Best Film goes along with the award for Best Director. Which leads me to believe that Black Swan or The Social Network will win, since Debra Granik, director of  Winter’s Bone was not nominated. If they had given her the chance she might have become the second woman EVER to win an Oscar in that category.

Since she’s not running, I want David Fincher to win! Although I think Black Swan’s Darren Aronofsky is talented, I still think he is young and his movie was WAY over the top. And his cast was handpicked to perfection and already talented enough to direct themselves. All Darren really did was hit us over the head with one obvious metaphor after another.

I think Natalie Portman will win for best actress but it won’t be a walk in the park. Her competition are all extremely talented. Annette Bening (The Kids are All Right) and Nicole Kidman (The Rabbit Hole) gave stunning performances. Hot on their heels is my girl Jennifer Lawrence from Winter’s Bone. If she doesn’t win, trust me, you will be hearing more from her.

In the boy’s club of Best Actor, it’s a toss-up for me. I have crushes on most of them, so it’s difficult, but my bet is on Colin Firth although I would be happiest if Jesse Eisenberg won.

We’ll have to wait and see if the day after the Oscars I am cheering, “I told you so,” or walking away with my tail between my legs. In the meantime, don’t forget to print out your ballots and play along.

Best Supporting Actress:
Should – Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit)
Will – Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech)

Best Supporting Actor:
Should – Geoffrey Rush (King’s Speech) or Christian Bale (Fighter)
Will – Geoffrey Rush

Best Adapted Screenplay:
Should – Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) OR Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini (Winter’s Bone)
Will – Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network)

Best Original Screenplay:
Should – Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson (The Fighter)
Will – Christopher Nolan (Inception)
