M.I.S.S. Muses: Through Child Eyes

M.I.S.S. Muses: Through Child Eyes

Just a few weeks ago I was half a world away with a carry-on bag, lots of mosquito repellent, and no hair product. It was quite a juxtaposition to my everyday here, but it was great. As much as I repeated shirts, removed makeup application from my routine, and got dirt embedded in every hair cuticle, I felt a confidence and worth beyond my looks.

My self-view shift was due to the kids I was with. While in Tanzania, I got the chance to work in an orphanage. I mostly played with the kids, interspersed among feeding them, and randomly did a diaper change or two. I wasn’t the best game creator or most on-top-of-it volunteer, and I was definitely not winning any beauty pageants. That was okay though. To these kids, I was awesome. I really cared for them and gave them all of me, taking in all these kids were giving me right back.

One day, the kids magically discovered the nub on the back of my head was a wannabe ponytail. They went wild over the prospect of doing my hair. There were no brushes, clips, or fancy decorations, but both boys and girls had a ball just moving my hair into various ‘dos. As grubby as their hands were and how entwined they became in my strands, I had a ball, too.

When I look at pictures from my trip, I wonder if I should have taken the extra ten minutes to apply some eyeliner or perhaps packed differently to allow for more flattering outfits and changes. But then I look at the kids and me with them, and I realize through their eyes, there’s just love. They adored me just the way I was, minus all beauty tools, and I adored them with runny noses and caked on dirt. And that is beautiful.

Dear Summer: Sex On The First Date…It Happens

Dear Summer 01.28

There is nothing like anticipating a first date. Think about it, all that preparation is intense: the mani/pedi, blow out, makeup, and wardrobe… followed by a careful inspection of your home. Are candles ready to be lit? Are the sheets sweet smelling and fresh? Is your sex drawer stocked (condoms, lube, gag ball)? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, convinced you won’t give it up on the first night, think again. Often times women take the backseat (wink wink) to being sexually aggressive. It’s not considered “ladylike” and don’t forget that quote mom used to tell you: “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?” But in this day and age, coming to terms with yourself sexually involves a heavy dose of reality. WOMEN. HAVE. SEX. Yup we do, and lots of it.

As modern women, we’re expected to be independent, nurturing, AND empowered- all while knowing how to fix a sandwich. But when it comes to sex, who put such a high premium on being a prude? Sex is natural and animalistic and if I’m still expected to wear the apron, then it’s MY right to wear nothing underneath it. So when my current boyfriend and I made plans to meet up for the first time, I didn’t think about what I was “supposed” to do. I disregarded each and every “YOU BETTER NOT” text and phone call. The precisely calculated game playing went out the window as I skipped down the feminine hygiene aisle at the grocery store. Trojan Her Pleasure found its way into my basket (hehe) and even came in a pretty purple box. The night belonged to ME. The morning after our tryst, I thought nothing of the possible aftermath. Would he call me? Would he end up being my boyfriend? I had no clue what would come of it, nor did it matter. He was hot, fun, and sexy. We were two people having a great time and it was OK.

Safe, consensual sex between two adults shouldn’t be attached to some old fashioned social stigma. Why put so much effort into dating someone if ultimately you’re not compatible in bed? Good to find out sooner than later, right? I once hooked up with a guy on the first date KNOWING we’d never hang out again. We lived in different states and after testing the waters, I realized it… just didn’t work. I seized the opportunity of that one evening to save myself from future sexual set backs.

Bottom line, sex on the first date can actually be quite pleasant, so don’t overanalyze. Know what to expect and try not to get your feelings hurt. If you’re looking for LOVE, realize it happens over time and reconsider your intentions. Only in town for one night? Strap it up and stay strong, it’s JUST SEX.

We Got The Beat : Eliza Doolittle

We Got The Beat : Eliza Doolittle

We Got The Beat : Eliza Doolittle

Times are tough and between living in a world at war with record high unemployment, sometimes we just need a break from it all. I have found, that in very stressful situations, Eliza Doolittle‘s “Rollerblades” is perfect for decreasing blood pressure. It’s easily two parts Corinne Bailey Rae, half Lilly Allen and a pinch of Adele. With out being chessey, her music is genuinely warm and optimistic.

22-year-old Doolittle has been writing songs since she was 12 and signed a publishing deal at 16. She co-wrote each of her debut album’s 13 tracks, collaborating with a host of top-notch songwriters and producers, including Greg Kurstin, Steve Chrisanthou (Corinne Bailey Rae), the late Jonny $ (Kylie, Massive Attack), and Craigie Dodds (Amy Winehouse). The result is a witty pop collection that mines sounds from the ’60s and ’70s while still sounding indisputably fresh. The one-two punch of “Rollerblades” and her U.K. debut “Skinny Genes” recall lost songs from the Motown era by the Marvelettes and The Supremes. In fact when asked to list some of her musical influences it easy to she why Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon. the Kinks, Aretha Franklin, the Beach Boys, the Beatles and yes even Erykah Badu would be on that list. Her sound is diverse but at it’s core still pop.

Doolittle performed at all of the major UK festivals last year and will showcase her songs in the states later this year adding a stop at both SXSW and Coachella. If you are going to either of these huge musical events, make sure to seek her set out!

Interested? Check out the video of my personal favorite song off the record, “Rollerblades” below. Easily one of the best hooks this year! Also check in on Eliza at her blog, she is always going to the best parties and traveling the globe touring.
