There was a time when downloading a track for free was shun upon by artists and record labels, but that is not necessarily the case anymore. Nowadays, we see more and more artists starting to embrace this growing trend of giving away free music and using it to their advantage. One of the latest artists to jump on this bandwagon is Dutch singer, emcee, and producer Pete Philly. Known as one half of the jazz, soul and hip-hop duo Pete Philly and Perquisite, the artist has recently branched out on his own to create an ambitious, soulful, and heavily skilled project entitled, “Open Loops.” With this project, Pete Philly is debuting a new song and video (12 new with two bonus tracks) weekly until January 3, 2011. All of the tracks can be downloaded for free and are leading up to his debut solo album, One.
By giving listeners a chance to get familiar with his sound, I predict that it’s only a matter of time before the Amsterdam-based emcee blows up and receives widespread acclaim outside of Europe. His “Open Loops” project reminds me of the “better days” of hip-hop. By incorporating elements of jazz, r&b, reggae, and electronic music, we get a little bit of everything from his music. He is a gifted lyricist who is able to make every track unique and unforgettable.
Born in Aruba to a Dutch mother and a Dominican father, Pieter “Pete Philly” Monzon’s background and environment helped to expose him to a wide variety of music at an early age. Before Pete Philly met Perquisite in the autumn of 2002, he was apart of funk formation Gotcha! and hip-hop group Nicotine. It wasn’t until January 2004 that Pete Philly and Perquisite decided to collaborate and the critically acclaimed The Mindstate EP was released. After releasing two more albums, Pete Philly branched out own his own and began working on his “Open Loops” project.
“An Open Loop is anything pulling at your attention that doesn’t belong where it is, the way it is. It’s a thought that won’t leave you till you deal with it. My thoughts become tracks. I’m releasing one ‘Open Loop’ every week for fourteen weeks.” – Pete Philly
Pete Philly is a man of his word. Since the launch of his “Open Loops” project in November, a new track or “open loop” has been available for download every Monday. Each week I look forward to hearing what new heat he has cooked up for us. So far, I haven’t been disappointed. On tacks like “Remember You” and “Us”, the smooth production and great instrumentation highlight his vocal diversity. His lyrical talent and one-of-a-kind flow are best displayed on tracks like “R Hood” and “Encore Une Fois.” To put it simply; Pete Philly is Hip-Hop in its truest form. His music is impressive, enticing, and will leave you wanting more! However, don’t just take my word for it. Check out the ultra-cool, shadow-draped videos that accompany each track below. Also, be sure to visit his visually stunning website (voted “Site Of The Day” by Design Licks) to pick up all of the songs in his “Open Loops” project!
