M.I.S.S. In The Mix: Willow Smith's "Whip My Hair" Video

For the last month and a half, the world has been bouncing to the sounds of Willow Smith’s “anti-hater” anthem, “Whip My Hair.” I can’t lie. I’ve joined the crowd of people who have found this track affectionally contagious. It’s hard not to. The 9-year old with superstar parents Will and Jada Pickett-Smith has taken the pop music world by storm with her unique style, super catchy lyrics, and keen fashion sense. With the success of her debut single at a high, we should have known that it wouldn’t take long for this little rising star to add visuals to the mix.

In the Ray Kay-directed video, we find Willow Smith rocking a variety of looks. From heart-shaped, braided mohawks to afro puffs, Willow proves that whipping one’s hair back and forth can be done regardless of the style. The video starts with Willow entering an all white, lifeless classroom. With a little whip action and some paint, she quickly turns things around. Soon, everyone gets in on the “whipping” action, including a once buttoned up teacher and an adorable little toddler.

Highlights of the video include Willow Smith’s super fantabulous nail art, many wardrobe changes, and a little stepping action. I’m excited to see what’s to come of one of the latest artists signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation music label. In the meantime, I guess I’ll just continue to “Whip it real hard. Whip it. Whip it real hard!”
