Usually I’m all over new music, especially when it’s blowing up my Twitter feed, however something about Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” left me uninterested for weeks. Maybe it was something to do with the fact that I am almost old enough to be her mom, and that I tend to leave the singers under 17 for the under 17 crowd. After weeks of seeing it all over the Internet I finally gave in and pressed play, and was impressed and surprised to hear what could best be described as early Rihanna-you know “Pon de Replay” Rihanna-singing a new soundtrack to get dressed to for ladies everywhere. Seeing as how Willow is another Jay-Z protégé, she’s signed to his label Roc Nation, hearing a Rihanna-esque sound from her song’s infectious hook down to her vocals was not at all a surprise. (It wasn’t a bad thing either, for Willow who is 10 but 22 year old Rihanna better up her game and watch her back because there’s always someone younger coming up the stairs behind you, darling.) Seeing pictures of the pint-sized fashionista channeling Riri’s style, however was a different story.
The last time I saw Willow Smith she was playing Will’s daughter in I Am Legend, since then she has shaved half her head and begun to develop her own look, albeit heavily influenced by certain pop stars. As a girl who grew up in the 90s and embraced every fashion trend from flannel to bhindis to ultra low rise jeans and everything in between, I can say that I commend her parents and stylist for giving her the room necessary to expand her style outside of what her mom picks out. Having the room to experiment and have fun with fashion is the best thing for any girl, especially one who is moving from childhood into the treacherous waters of adolescence, no matter who their parents are or aren’t. Do I personally love her style? Not really, but I didn’t love my style at 10 and that’s the whole point. In five years when we’re all going Rihanna who and Willow has an empire of fans like the Olsens did back in day, I’m sure she’ll look back on her Whip My Hair Days and be just as embarrassed as anyone else would get when their parents whip out the naked baby pics for a new BF/GF.
That said and done, I can’t get Whip My Hair out of my head and if I were a tween or the parent of one I would totally buy her album when it hits shelves. Also, how smart are Will and Jada making their kids work hard for the money so they don’t end up like some other spoiled Hollywood brats? Just whip it.
