While I’m waiting for Fashion Week to start in London, my thoughts drift to shiny things that are lovingly wrapped in a very specific and special shade of blue. I’m obsessing, of course, about Tiffany & Co (who doesn’t?). I’ve had countless girlfriends show me their Tiffany engagement rings, bracelets and necklaces that their boyfriends, husbands, fiances and mothers have given to them over the years. I’m always excited for them having received such thoughtful and elegant gifts from their loved ones. I mean, there’s just no feeling that compares to that Tiffany feeling, right?
As shocking as it might sound, I’ve never actually bought anything from Tiffany’s, or had anyone buy something for me from there (no, this isn’t going to turn into a sob story about how I wasn’t loved as a child because I wasn’t given Tiffany’s…wink), but that ends now. Frankly (pun intended!), I’m tired of waiting for a guy to bring me something from Tiffany’s, and I really love that my first purchase will be a gift from myself to myself…and this gift has a lot of meaning.
The last couple of years have been a financial roller coaster. I lost my job in Feb 2009 (like a lot of people); spent the next nine months looking for work (like a lot of people); and found work, only to be laid off again (like a lot of people). I finally found professional security at the end of 2009 when I was offered my current job, which allows me to talk to all types of creative people and keep a roof over my wee head. Most of my paychecks have gone to paying down debt and making sure I am socking enough money away just in case the bottom drops out again, but I have hit a point where I can afford to splurge a little bit on myself. Cue Tiffany!
When my lovely Editor-in-Chief, Gabriella Davi-Khorasanee posted on her Twitter and Facebook account recently that Frank Gehry had a new line of jewelry available at Tiffany’s, I couldn’t wait to check the new line out, as I am a fan of Gehry’s work, and used to work with his former Technical Director when I lived in Los Angeles. I’ve followed his architectural work for years and knew that this line would have my name ALL over it.
I wasn’t wrong. I’d buy half the collection if I could afford it. Luckily, my favorite pieces are ones that I can actually afford. My favorite has to be the Star Ring in textured black titanium. I love everything about this ring. I love that it’s textured, that it’s a gorgeous charcoal grey, that it has such an fascinating shape in a ring and that it’s not your typical piece of jewelry. Other favorites from the collection are accompanying Star Bangle, the Torque Concrete Ring (what? Yes!), the F.O.G pendant (because I live in SF), and the Torque Ring in black gold.
Since this is Tiffany’s, other pieces caught my eye as well. I love Elsa Peretti’s designs and think her Bone Cuff is pure modern elegance. I’ve always been a fan of Carnelian as a stone (maybe because I grew up off a street named after it), so the Round Pendant would definitely make the wish list. I think the sentimental favorite of the group belongs to the Starfish Pendant, as my father grew up near the ocean on Maui. It’s so delicate and beautiful.
Feel like going on a shopping spree with me? Great! I’ll see you at Tiffany’s!
Until next week (and my next obsession)!
