♥♥ Go to “The Other Side” with Nina Sky. Their brand new EP is the first taste of music we get from the duo since their 2004 self-titled debut album. The Other Side features eight brand new tracks and appearances from Kidz in the Hall frontman Naledge and Brooklyn emcee Melo X. Download it for free on Nina Sky’s website!
♥♥ Remember those awkward school dances and birthday parties we were all subjected to as a kid? You know the ones where the boys stood on one side of the room, the girls on the other, and no one was really supposed to dance? Well, the kids you’re about to see apparently didn’t get the memo and it has made for one awesome video! The video features music from the electric music pioneer Bruce Haack, also dubbed the “King of Techno.” Stones Throw Records announced that they are planning to release Farad: The Electronic Voice , a collection of music from Bruce Haack that will feature his work with the vocoder, which encodes speech to electronic sound. Haack is credited with building one of the first truly musical vocoders in 1969. The new album will contain recordings from 1970-1982, including “Party Machine” (1982) seen below with video from Philip Anagnos. Check it out! I even spy “The Carlton” dance!
♥♥ North Carolina stand up! Kooley High is a group hailing from this southern state consisting of three emcees, Charlie Smarts, Tab-One, and Rapsody. Along with two producers, Foolery and The Sinopsis, and DJ Ill Digitz, Kooley High have perfected a sound that is all their own, while still being able to remain reminiscent of the better days of hip hop. Last week, they released the album Eastern Standard Time and I haven’t been able to stop listening! EST features production by K-Salaam & Beatnick and Napoleon Wright II. Guest appearances come courtesy of fellow N.C. natives Median and HaLo. You can download the album for free on the group’s website or at DJBooth.net. If you like what you hear and wish to support the artists, stop by web store to purchase a physical copy or you can donate via Amazon. “Float On” is one of my favorite tracks!
♥♥ Theophilus London adds visuals to his his track “Hey Wonderful” from the I Want You mixtape. The video was directed by Onat and Fabian and was shot in Amsterdam and Brussels. Watch Theophilus put the needle to the record and sing along to Stevie Wonder’s “Love Light In Flight,” which he sampled for the track. It feels like paradise!
♥♥ Converse recently announced a special limited edition run of Chuck Taylor All Stars designed by rapper Big Boi in celebration of his Def Jam debut Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. The shoes were designed by the artist himself. The new special design features the album title wrapped around the outer sides of the shoe’s heel, and fans can enter to win their own pair at one of a select few soon-to-be-announced online outlets, which will be giving away three exclusive copies of the shoe, autographed by Big Boi himself. Awesome!
♥♥ Check out the cool album cover for Chromeo’s latest album Business Casual, which is due out on September 14th. “Don’t Turn The Lights Off” is the electro-funk duo’s first single from that album. Check out the video! You can pre-order the album on their website.
♥♥ Speaking of album covers, one of the cutest of the year would probably have to go to female emcee Rah Digga. Rashia drops her album Classic on September 14th. You can view the tracklist to the Nottz produced album at 2dopeboyz. Put a fist in the air for hip-hop!
♥♥ Speaking of Nottz, slick soul singer Mayer Hawthorne has released a new single “I Need You” produced by the talented and underrated producer. The 12-inch record of “I Need You” features a vocal & instrumental version on one side and an etching by Miami illustrator Freegums on the other. The record is available for pre-order at Stones Throw Records. For my people in the UK, you can pre-order the album at Rush Hour!
♥♥ Peanut Butter Wolf and A-Trak are hitting the road with their label families to throw four very special Stones Throw x Fool’s Gold Discotheque parties – new and classic house, disco and boogie jams all night. The parties kick off this weekend in Chicago with a Lollapalooza afterparty on August 6th and then traveling to San Francisco, Portland, and wrapping up with a very special boat party in Vancouver.
♥♥ Following up on his The Mixtape About Nothing, Wale is keeping the Seinfeld-inspired theme in his latest mixtape More About Nothing. There’s been a lot of hype surrounding this project as many feel that his debut album did not lead up to expectations. Download, listen, and check it out for yourself. Let me know what you think.
♥♥ Just in time for their opening slot on Chromeo’s U.S. tour, Fool’s Gold’s dynamic duo Telephoned has put together a mixtape, Keep Their Heads Ringin. The mixtape features Teki Latex, Rihanna, and Jay- Z among many others.
♥♥ Get more Dilla in your life and download The Donut Shop! This free EP contains three previously unreleased Dilla beats and three unreleased instrumental versions of Dilla’s production for Mos Def, Q-Tip, & Busta Rhymes.
