The Spring season usually denotes when labels release their floral designs. In the Insight Womens Spring 2011 collection, you’ll find a few flowers, but instead of the typical tulips, bunches of retro roses sprout in their garden of grunge. This one particular print, swimming in a sea of blackness, reminds me of the florals of the 90s. The bleached out paisley and sex-kitten cheetah prints bring it back as well. Insight takes this romantic nostalgia and mashes it up with another a 90s look, grunge, to create a toughness that that only the ladies of today could rock.
This collection is all about mixing it up. Think thrashed and destructed cut-off denim short shorts layered over another 90s commodity- the biker short. Top that off with a worn-in, burned out, oversized graphic tee that you would only find on your boyfriend’s bedroom floor, or on the racks of Insight.
You’ll find some sexy silhouettes in this collection as well. Skin-tight mini skirts sit on the racks next to dresses with a more forgiving flow, but still sexy (and bra friendly!). But the look’s not complete until you toughen it up with a cut-off denim vest, or a military-inspired jacket softened up with the feel of gauze. It’s all about the mash up.
Some favorites in the collection include a cadet blazer, a menswear top with wrap around pockets, and a pair of jeans with artwork- from a child. The marbleized paint of a 4-year-old inspired the creative director and ended up on a pair of Insight jeans. 7 cuts of jeans can be found in the collection, including the “beanpoles”, what they cleverly call the skinny.
Since the clothing line goes grunge for Spring, it makes sense that the swim collection, “Shadows of the Morning Light,” stems from inspiration from the song by the alternative rock band, Jane’s Addiction. This line blends together the bohemian look of trashed out paisley and watercolor florals with more grunge and glam. There are even hints of some psychedelic geometric designs, like in this deep cut one-piece suit. On the bikinis, details like shirring, beads, and grommets glam up the looks. One of the best features are the super skinny elastic ties, meant to prevent annoying tan lines when frolicking in the morning light.
Thanks to Vanessa for showing me the line and conversing about coincidence. M.I.S.S. looks forward to more Insight.
