ASR: Vans Girls Apparel Spring 2011

Vans is keeping it California with their Spring 2011 Collection

Vans is keeping it California with their Spring 2011 Collection

After previewing the Vans Girls Spring footwear collection, Chris ushered me over to the other booth (yes, Vans is so huge they had two booths) that housed the apparel and accessories.  For this season, Vans wanted to keep close to their skate and surf heritage, but just like the shoes, they’re putting a little more into the surf category.  What better way to do it than by expanding their swim line?  Some pieces, like board shorts and bikini tops, donned the O.G. Vans stickers in a colorful collage, while a trendier one piece suit, one of the collection’s highlights, had ruffles, an underwire, and even animal print.  Super sexy.

For the clothing, most of it had a well-worn in comfortable look and feel, using heathered and burned out fabrics, raw seams, washed out graphics, and deconstruction.  Some prints were still bold, though, like the yellow halter dress, pictured above, reminding me of the works of Keith Haring.  The silhouettes in both the dresses and the tops came in a variety of styles, from the forgiving and flowy, to the more trendy one shoulder looks.  One particular top looked plain in the front, but had a cut-out skull face in the back.  Another notable top had a cropped cut with a burnout checkerboard.  So totally Vans.  A favorite piece of mine, one that was also featured in the ASR fashion show and that I would rock nonstop in the Spring, was a sleeveless hoodie, in- you guessed it- a soft burnout material in watered down hues.  Are we already spotting a trend in this season?

The accessories department also focused on the beach, with a straw market bag and a surf-inspired “Hang Loose” graphic canvas tote.  But Vans still kept it close to their skate roots with a cute novelty trucker hat coin purse and a crosshatch weave on the faux leather purses, very reminiscent of their famous checkerboard designs.

Make sure you check back and “hang loose” with M.I.S.S. as we’ll give you more of Vans once the season nears.
