Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I’ll never be alone
And you, my friend, will see
You’ve got a friend in me
(you’ve got a friend in me)
Yeah, Michael Jackson may have been singing about a giant killer rat in his hit song, Ben, but he could have easily been singing about the world famous Ben’s Chili Bowl. Ben’s has been a DC institution since the 1950s, surviving through the DC riots of the late ’60s and the economically devastating 70s and 80s, when scores of people fled to the suburbs and crack had taken over the city. Through it all they’ve consistently served up not only the best chili in DC, but some of the best chili in the country, along with an assorted of pies and cakes to wash all that chili down with. The chili itself is thick, spicy, and tastes even better when topping off a cheeseburger, half smoke, or a pile of cheese fries. This isn’t the place you go when you’re trying to count the calories, but it is the spot to hit up at 2am after you’ve danced your ass off at one of the local clubs.
Peep DC rapper Wale’s video for Chillin’ with shots of Ben’s Chili Bowl plastered all over the place.
