♥♥ Raphael Saadiq grew up during a great time for R&B and Soul music! His music is heavily influenced and inspired by some of the best. This might be one of reasons why he chose to cover the Spinners’ 1970 classic “It’s A Shame” for Levi’s Pioneer Sessions. Saadiq put his unique spin on this track by updating the iconic jingling guitar and bubbling bassline of the original. Check out behind-the-scenes footage of Raphael talking about his recreation of “Its A Shame.” You can download the track on Levi’s website.
♥♥ What do you think about the whole Lil’ Kim vs. Nicki Minaj fiasco? In the latest installment of Karen Civil’s “Civilized Talk” series, female emcee Jean Grae gives her opinion on the matter, as well as discusses where she sees female MC’s heading in the future and the femcee landscape as a whole. Don’t you just love Jean Grae? It’s kind of hard not to.
♥♥ If you’re a fan of hip-hop and in need of a good laugh, be sure to check out Complex’s list of The 50 Worst Hip-Hop Fails Of All Time. I think they’ve covered just about everything! Included in the list are Lil’ Mama’s infamous stage crash and Vanilla Ice’s film debut. Wait, Vanilla Ice had a movie? Sidenote: While you’re there, also be sure to check out M.I.S.S.’ very own tech guru Ron Simms in the Twit-Kick All-Stars! Go Ron!

♥♥ Head on over to Designboom and check out Jeff Mills’ collaboration with Yuri Suzuki on a digital-analog hybrid disc. It’s a disc with a vinyl press-on on one side and a CD mix on the other! In other words, the disc can be played in both a CD player and a vinyl record player. This is too cool! Let’s hope more releases are done this way!
♥♥ Janelle Monae makes an exquisite cover of a Michael Jackson favorite, “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin for Billboard’s Mash-up Monday. She adds a jazzy, R&B twist to the song that dates back to 1936! It’s easy to see why MJ named it as one of his favorites!
♥♥ Keepin’ it real son! This week’s throwback comes from Mariah Carey and Old Dirty Bastard aka Dirt McGirt aka Big Baby Jesus! (R.I.P.) Whatever you choose to call him, one thing I think we all can agree on his ability to take over this track! The year was 1995! (Nick Cannon was probably 11) “Fantasy” was #1 on the charts and we’ve now come to realize that this was only the beginning of Mariah’s journey into bare midriffs and tight clothing. I love it though! Check out the Bad Boy remix of “Fantasy.”
♥♥ Brooklyn’s Holy Ghost! (and Berlin producer Dixon) spin Monarchy’s “Love Get Out Of My Way” into a splashy disco-stunner.
♥♥ Ro Spit was inspired by Mayer Hawthorne’s A Strange Arrangement for his project entitled, A Different Arrangement. Ro Spit rhymes over the musical production of Mayer Hawthorne for this very cool album. Check it out! Spotted at Wux Flux.
♥♥ Check out the Paul Woolford remix to Scott Hardkiss’ “Beat Freak.”
♥♥ DJ Phaze’s “Jill Scott Jawn Vol. 2” is full of your favorite tunes from the lovely lady! It’s the perfect soundtrack to any summer day!
