Don’t you just love coming home after a shopping trip and emptying out your bag? I’ll admit, sometimes I’ve opened up my shopping bags and even forgot what I bought….that’s how I get down! Believe me, I can do damage in no time at all, like the time I dropped some bread on 8 pairs of designer jeans in 30 minutes. How much did I spend a minute? You do the math!
As gratifying as it is to find that sweet bargain on that sweater, it’s just as sweet to find a treasure amongst other people’s “trash” at a clothing swap. It’s equally satisfying to go home and dump my bag of “new” clothes (to me at least), and go through what I decided to let live in my wardrobe. There are those items that make me wonder why I even picked it up in the first place, very similar to that compulsive purchase that you’ll vow to return the next day. But mostly, I look over each piece and just imagine the perfect time and place to wear it. And knowing that I swapped instead of shopped makes me feel like a hundred bucks that I would have spent in the stores.
Want to know what I scored? You probably do, because this idea of looking into other people’s shopping bags (in this case, swap bags), has become a trend in the digital world. Folks all over will turn on their cameras and show the world (via youtube, of course), their latest finds. These vids, called “shopping hauls“, range anywhere from the trip to Target or Sephora, to the lucky few that can splurge at designer boutiques.
At a swap last weekend, I tried to be conservative with what I took home. Although I just dumped 2 garbage bags full of my old wares, I still had no room for more! However, there were some things that I just couldn’t pass up. Check out my haul from Swap! Not Shop!, and remember, that no pockets were busted for this!
I can’t pinpoint my favorite item that I copped, but the most useful will definitely have to be these Nike running shoes. I even found a bag to match. No, they’re not the most flossy shoes out there, but I will be putting some good use to them on the tracks and trails. They were barely worn and just in my size. Now I can conserve my sneakers for kickin’ it! On the flip side of fashion, I found this really sexy slip dress that was fresh from the cleaners. I love the lace details and beading. Don’t trip, I won’t wear it with my running shoes!
I did find a few things that I will wear together, like this I Heart SF tee paired with some acid washed skinnies. Unfortunately, the skinnies were too skinny for me, so in true swap fashion, I passed them down to my daughter. I almost want to cry knowing that she’s growing taller! I also scored on this whole boho look, and I can’t wait to rock it. The top is from Forever 21, a store I wouldn’t normally shop in, but I’ll rock it! I found a nice crochet bikini top and floral scarf to go with it, and the distressed jeans are a patched up pair from Antik Denim. Again, I normally wouldn’t buy these jeans as first pick at Nordstrom, but since they were in my size and look good on my booty, I had to pick them up. Besides those finds, I found a pair of True Religion jeans (what a score!), some flats for work, and a few tees and tanks which I customized with screenprints.
I wasn’t the only one that scored some finds, of course. Some lucky lady copped a Prada messenger style purse, and a couple came home with a set of vintage dishes. I wish I could check out everyone’s hauls from the swap!
In the end, there are always more items that what people take home, so it all gets packed up and donated to charity. There were still some really good finds in the leftovers, so you know that the needy are getting the goods!
It wouldn’t be a true haul if I didn’t have a vid on youtube for you, so here it goes. Happy hauling to you, whether it’s from shopping or swapping!
