Although Joe Simon songs ranked on the Billboard charts from the 1960’s through the early 1980’s, he is one of the many R&B singers you don’t hear about too often. There are so many stellar soul/R&B artists and tracks that people of our generation have never heard – or don’t know they have heard, because the melodies are revamped and used for samples – and often the reworked versions are the only ones the listener knows. I apologize for repeatedly pointing out this fact, but I find it to be a travesty when this occurs. Hip-hop has always borrowed from the oldies, which is fine, but learn the oldies and keep them spinning too!! That’s an order!!

Can you hear Outkast’s “So Fresh, So Clean” in Joe Simon’s “Before the Night Is Over”? If you want to check another Joe Simon sample, listen to Lil’ Kim and 50 Cent’s “Magic Stick” – It has a sample of Simon’s “It Be’s That Way Sometimes”.

Yay! Me too! I don’t think I knew this one!

PS. My Dad’s favorite Outkast song is Ms. Jackson. That whole album was gold.
