I know that Mother’s Day was yesterday (I hope all the mothers out there had special days with their loved ones), but this week, I’m obsessing over those special women who play a complementary role in the lives of children. I’m talking about the aunties and a very special website that is devoted just to them, savvyauntie.com.
I’m not sure how I managed to stumble upon the savvyauntie site, but I’m so very happy that I did. Launched in 2008, it’s a site for women just like me, modern, savvy women who love kids, but for different reasons, don’t have them. It’s a place for them to talk (ok, brag) about their nieces and nephews, get gift ideas based on personalities and award winners, plan outings and activities and even expert advice so they’re just as in the know as the mommies.
I’ve got plenty of nieces and nephews (currently ten) that I absolutely adore and they bring a lot of laughter and joy into my life. Several of my best girlfriends are proud mommies and it’s been incredible watching their lives transform as a result of their little bundles of joy entering their lives. But the mommy bug just hasn’t bitten me yet. I’m totally fine with that, but I think that there are times when society, for whatever reason, don’t quite know what to do with that sentiment. For some time, I’ve felt that women who haven’t had children by a certain age, or choose not to have children at all didn’t really have a place to go to vent, to commiserate and to affirm their choices and circumstances, but savvyauntie is a wonderful site where we can all support each other and those special little people in our lives.
I take my role as an auntie very seriously, both as a role model and as an extra parent when mom and dad need a little help. I have no idea what the future holds me for as a parent, and if I never have children, I’m OK with that. I get to be a part of the lives of some pretty amazing kids and I want my nieces and nephews to know that there’s a whole world of possibilities out there and that they will always have my support and enthusiasm for their adventures, whatever shape they take.
A very special cheers goes out to all the savvy aunties there and the nieces and nephews who are very lucky to have you!
Until next week (and my next obsession)!
