When one of my girls asked me if I wanted to go to prom with her, the first thing that crossed my mind was “What will I wear?!” I tried on 3 fabulous and glamorous 80s dresses from not only my closet, but also from my mom’s. What dress did I choose?

This was a difficult choice for me to make because this wasn’t just any prom like back in the days, you know, with the bad date and bad dress. This was Yelp East Bay’s 2nd Annual Ol’ Skool Prom, and Yelp don’t play around. The night promised balloon arches and spiked punch, and people were encouraged to relive their prom night, or a prom night of the past, by coming correct with their fit. Remember, Yelp is based on other people’s reviews, and if you weren’t looking right, someone could call you out!
The first dress I tried on was a plum-colored Gunne Sax dress with floral appliques and a bubble bottom. I love the straps because they’re just so full of volume. It’s definitely an official prom dress that’s full of fun.
The second dress is one of my mom’s old dresses. Back in the 80s, she was quite the karaoke queen, and the ruched gold lame leopard dress was one that she wore while singing on a cruise ship. Rock star mama!
The last dress I tried reminds me of my mother. Shoulder pads, all-over sequins, and long-sleeved with an interesting design. Authentically 80s and totally for the glamour girl.
Although all 3 dresses would be perfect for the night, I decided to go with the plum Gunne Sax dress. The sequins dress just looked too good on one of my dates (we triple dated), so naturally she had to wear it. As far as my mom’s old dress…if there was a karaoke machine set up then I definitely would have rocked it, so I’ll just save it for then. The plum dress just made me feel like I want to have fun, because that’s all girls just wanna do!
Since I was tapping into the Cyndi Lauper vibe, I needed to accessorize! I went all out with pearls, lace, and flowers. Mixing vintage with new is a rule that should always be followed for a special night.
Dress: Vintage Gunne Sax by Jessica McClintock (with added black flower brooch)
Flower & Net Headband & Flower Earrings: Urban Outfitters
Silver Lame Clutch: Vintage
Large Pearl Necklace: Vintage
Bracelets: Assorted collection from garage sales, thrift shops, and bridal party gifts
Calculator Watch: Casio
Lace Stockings: DKNY
Shoes: Jessica Simpson (surprisingly comfortable and easy to dance in!)
I wouldn’t look right if my dates were looking wrong. They, too, did it up in all the glam with teased hair, pearl strands, a lace dress with rabbit fur coat (don’t worry, it was given a new life from a vintage store), and of course, the fabulous sequins dress.
