Fashion. Anyone can be in it, and just as quickly out of it. With the right magazines, in-season items, and bank account balance, anyone can keep up with fashion. Style, on the other hand, is a different animal. Style is much more than the items you wear, it’s how you put them together. It isn’t something that can be learned, it’s a natural part of you. M.I.S.S. gathered together some of New York’s most prominent taste makers currently influencing both fashion and style in the city to talk about what style means to them.
A new webseries, FOLLOW THE LEADER will celebrate the natural style of some of the current movers and shakers in what is arguable the most fashionable city in the world. Each episode will aim to capture the fearless style choices that New York locals are famous for, and find out the philosophy behind their styles. From the hat they bought at their favorite boutique, to the pair of earrings they received from a long time friend, we will learn that for the stylish, material goods always hold a deeper sentimental value. We will also dig to expose the social ramifications of style: what does being a punk, a dandy, a thug, a skater, a prep, a vintage lover, a hipster, a glam rocker, a nu waver, a nu raver– or anything else for that matter—mean in our society?
FOLLOW THE LEADER will, in its initial three episodes, profile the likes of modern pin-up extraordinaire Vintage Vandalizm, self proclaimed “Hood Tomboy meets Parisian Princess” designer and director Va$htie Kola, and the never-without-neckwear stylist Dandy Wellington. Join us as we explore what style means means to them.
