M.I.S.S. Muses: A Birthday Boy’s Wish

M.I.S.S. MUSES A Birthday Boy's Wish

Recently, a friend of mine celebrated his birthday. There were “Happy birthday!” text messages, reminiscing and other birthday comments via facebook, love from and plans made with family, and surrounding people adding into the birthday wishes. I was happy to see my friend enjoying his day and getting warm words and sentiments from so many people.

At about 1 pm on my friend’s day, I received a text from my birthday celebrating friend. “Did you see my facebook post? It’s for you.” Intrigued, I logged onto facebook from my phone and read the birthday boy’s updated status message:

Wait a minute! My eyes are closed and I’m going to share my birthday wish with you all: Cherish the time you spend with the ones you love and care about you. There is a reason why you all are on my friends list. You have met me once or maybe more than once and we had a good time, sometimes even a great time. Maybe you are family but I want to let you ALL know MY life wouldn’t be this filled with joy if I didn’t meet you.

I was so touched and inspired by reading that.

Throughout the day the birthday boy reached out to other people in his life and asked them to read his birthday wish. He responded to facebook wall postings with “Please read my posting. It’s for you.” People who would’ve just stopped by his page to post a quick “Happy birthday!” stopped to read it and take it in.

The thing that got me the most about this birthday wish was the realness of it. We’re not close with all our facebook friends or even real-life friends. But for some reason these people are in our lives. Perhaps we don’t consider these people friends any more, but our paths have now crossed at some point and no matter how slight it is, they are now different because of it. Some people change our lives forever out of brief encounters, others are there for longer and we don’t  always notice their effect. But for most of our joyous moments, the people of our lives help create those times or share them with us.

Those of us who are lucky to feel love and warm wishes, on birthdays or otherwise, don’t always stop to think of those sending the love and wishes for us. Let’s take this birthday boy’s wish as a reminder to celebrate those around us and cherish the people in our lives. Spend time with those who give us energy and positivity, and thank all who’ve made any impression on us through life.

Thank you to all of you reading, without whom I would not have the same reason to write this for.

that was really touching! I always get like that around my birthday, because birthdays wouldn’t be the same without family and friends…

  3. Beyond birthdays, life wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for the people we share it with! :)
