Reading is Sexy: The Selby Is in Your Place

The Who is in The What? The Selby is interior, fashion, portrait photographer and painter Todd Selby, whose photographs have been seen gracing the pages of Vogue Paris, British Vogue, Architectural Digest France, GQ, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times, Dazed & Confused, Another Magazine and the London Sunday Times. Needless to say, the man knows his subject quite well. His debut book, The Selby Is in Your Place (in bookstores now) is a modern, quirky and stylized marriage of his subjects and his own artistic vision…and one worth checking out.

The Selby Is in Your Place was first conceived when Selby began taking portraits of authors, musicians, artists and designers in their homes and posting them on his website. Always curious (read: nosy), he was interested in seeing how each subjects public, personal style was reflected in the places their private spaces. Selby has collected a wide range of diverse subjects for his book, including Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler, Karl Lagerfeld, Andre Walker and Oliver Zahm, traveling to New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, Sydney and London to view their residences.

Every profile in the book is accompanied by Selby’s watercolor portraits, with objects from their homes and illustrated questionnaires, which each sitter fills out. There are over 30 profiles in the book, most of which have never been seen before, resulting in a hodgepodge collection of unique spaces, subjects and articles that will be a conversation starter wherever you place it in your own home.

I love the idea that spawned this book. I am totally guilty of looking in windows of homes wherever I am  and I am obsessed with how others decorate their personal spaces, famous or otherwise. This book isn’t afraid to put that out there, and instead of being just another famous/hip/stylish icon’s interiors book, this turns into a guilty, voyeuristic pleasure. You’ll fall in love with the watercolors that Selby sprinkles in his book (it reminds me of a sketchbook and a carnival drawing you took home when you were little) and get a bang out of the sheets that he includes on his subject. It’s a very stylish and stylized version of something you’ve seen before, but in format you might have not seen or expected. Get online or to your nearest bookstore and snap this book up fast!
