It seems like all I’ve been doing for the past couple months is stare at samples, mostly shoes, ALL DAY LONG. It’s been shoes and earrings and clothing, oh my! Not just staring at the samples, but sorting them, describing them, showing them to buyers, taking pictures of them, learning them, packing them, and starting all over again.
For those who don’t know, fashion companies show samples of product, or examples of the clothing/footwear/accessories styles, to store buyers and members of the press to secure sales orders and gain exposure. I’ve been showing these samples at tradeshows, in retail stores, and in a showroom. Starting at the end of January with tradeshow season and fashion markets, it’s been a hustle between shows, appointments, and follow up to get the correct info to the right parties in time.
It’s been busy, a bit crazy, and a lot to manage at times. There are a lot of unanswered emails originating from me, trying customers, and lugging around multiple 50 lb. bags. Maintaining some sort of life outside of work boggles my mind at times. And I seem to break out as I work on the road. Traveling, hustling, and keeping going each day has not always been easy to do and maintain.
But really? All of this has been pretty awesome. I mean, hello, I’m dealing with cute products, supportive owners, growing brands, and some sweet customers. I love great fashion and entrepreneurship, both of which I deal with daily. If my complaint is that I have to stare at shoes, you know I am a darn lucky lady.
But it’s not just that I love my job that inspires me. Yes, I get to wear designs I love and am surprised by pairs of shoes arriving to my door. Beyond that though, I’m in the working zone that is keeping me going. This tradeshow I’m at now isn’t very busy, but I’ve been keeping my energy up and orders have been coming. I’m working hard, and it’s paying off. People I’ve been trying to get in touch with are coming around. New buyers are discovering my lines. Retailers get excited, owners get excited, and we all make money. I love it. I’m really starting to see the fruits of my labor. It’s not just a hopeful attitude I’m running on, it’s seeing results, efforts meaning something, and gaining confidence in each new action under my belt. Working hard is feeding me back the energy to keep working hard to keep growing.
So as hard as it may get sometimes, it’s great to look around and think, “look what I’ve done.” Then we can look forward to all that is still to come. Keep working it.
