From an oddly young age, I developed an affinity for the macabre delights of horror. Whether it was watching Suspiria at an age way too young to be healthy, or reading a copy of The Telltale Heart on the playground only to freak out the rest of the lame 4th graders reading Goosebumps, I’ve been delighting in all things dark and disturbing for a while now.
Thankfully, I am not the only one though. Lots of people love to celebrate the aesthetic of horror, and one of those people you should get to know is New York based photographer and director Bijoux Altamirano. Born and raised in the city, Bijoux began her career as a video artist experimenting with themes including horror, gore, and the occult. Her video piece “Crazy”, which was commissioned by the Deitch Projects, is an eerie mash up of old school horror flicks, particularly focusing on the female in horror.
Lately, the multi-talented Bijoux has been shopping a softer version of her gore-inflected aesthetic to a variety of artistic disciplines, directing a music video for the popular disco band Jessica 6. Most recently, Bijoux photographed a misty, demon filled fashion spread for Vice with performance artist and musician Kembra Pfahler (of the cult glam band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black) modeling designs from the likes of Mason Martin Margiela and Jen Kao.
You can view Bijoux Altamirano’s entire spread for the April issue on the Vice site, and check out her latest video work on the Project Fathom site. We promise you’ll want to keep tabs on the auteur’s re- appropriation of horror and gore as her career takes off!
