Fashion Meets Music: The Beatles

“People are still looking at Picasso. People are still looking at artists who broke through the constraints of their time period to come up with something that was unique and original. In the form that they worked in, in the form of popular music, no one will ever be more revolutionary, more creative and more distinctive than The Beatles were.”

What is there to say about the most commerically sucessful, critically acclaimed acts in the history fo popular music that is still relevant after almost 50 years? The Beatles talent exceeded the medium of music and reaches through the decades to continuously influence us all. They were the arbiters of cool for a generation and became catalysts for bohemianism and activism in various social and political causes. Their German exi haircuts, worn by rebellious youth, had a global impact on fashion and their music changed the way we listen to and experience music in our lives.

The Beatles, with their final line up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Geoorge Harrison, and RIngo Starr, hit the UK charts in 1962 with their hit single “Love Me Do” and were already hugely successful by the time they performed on the Ed Sullivan Show to 74 million viewers in the US in 1964.  The phenomena that came to be known as Beatlemania was documented in their bawdy mock-documentary, Hard Day’s Night, which was an international success when it premiered.  Over the years as their popularity grew and the group’s song writing became more sophisticated, their popularity transformed them from mop topped boy-banders to the embodiment of the progressive ideals that we identify with the 1960’s. From their dabbling with drugs and movement into psychedelic rock, to their meeting with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and subsequent breakup and solo careers, The Beatles were the ultimate Baby Boomers.

Today, everyone from Justin Beiber to Lady Gaga and Rihanna has been known to list The Beatles as an influence. Their music has been covered by greats and not so greats, and has even been featured in a commercial or ten. When contemplating their style, you can’t help but notice that those military inspired jackets they wore on the cover of Sgt Pepper seem to hint at the bedazzled military jackets worn by Michael Jackson over a decade later. With a Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas and a motion picture based on their music, not to mention their own edition of Rock Band , it’s safe to say that The Beatles will continue to remain a part of our collective conscience.

Honestly, if you don’t know by now that The Beatles are insanely amazing, I can’t help you. I’ve also run out of things to say about how insanely amazing they are, so watch these videos and judge for yourself.

* FYI- Anti fur and leather designer Stella McCartney is the daughter of vegetarian Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s son Sean, is a musican turn fashion darling since he began dating model Charolette Kemp Muhl.
