Unseen Heroes break it down:
Marked by uncertainty, life is comprised of changes, challenges, conflicts and resolutions. At any given moment our lives can be peaceful or turbulent, horrific or beautiful, confusing or— in rare moments of clarity—seem easily understood. Nonetheless, each commonplace event is part of a process, a cycle constantly bringing us closer to the only thing that is certain—the inevitability of death. While the embodiment of death, as an end to our time on earth is something everyone shares, perhaps what is most important, what creates our individuality and ultimately our humanity is not when or how we reach this point but the choices made in between.
CaliLOVE addresses more than the concept of death. Instead, by confronting this inevitability, Amanda Lopezs latest body of work reveals and celebrates the preciousness of life. Inspired by the dia de los muertos (day of the dead) celebration, these portraits capture individuals whose faces are painted to resemble skeletons. Through this literal representation, each subject straightforwardly confronts his or her distant fate. However, the finitude of these painted masks quickly yields to the vibrancy of each individuals personality and complex emotionality radiating from behind shadowy black make-up and ominous smiles.
Within each photograph, Lopezs work aims to capture this juncture between life, death and the everyday choices that define who we are and where we are headed.
